Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire

Obsidian has unveiled a new crowd-funding campaign for its freshly announced Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire. Instead of Kickstarter, the sequel will use Fig, the platform that allows backers to potentially invest in the project as well. Like the first game, the project is looking for 1.1 million dollars for funding and will be available on PC, Mac, and Linux.

Deadfire once again will follow the Watcher, the player character, as the return of the god Eothos, who possesses the stone titan that lies beneath the player's fortress of Caed Nua, destroys the fortress and leaves them for dead. In order to save the the soul of the Watcher, players must follow the renegade god to the archipelago of Deadfire, an eastern land comprised of thousands of islands.

Despite this distance from the original game, player actions from that game will carry over and can have an impact in Deadfire. Obsidian is also hoping to improve on many of the game's dynamic elements, with NPCs following more complex routines and weather effects playing a more prominent ambient role. Several of the first game's party members will return, the first confirmed being Edér, the fighter. Pushing the game through crowdfunding will also open up the option for multi-classing. Other improvements include an overhauled graphics engine and new user interfaces for inventory and dialogue.

To board the Deadfire train will cost $29 for a digital download. Physical copies of the game become available at $59 plus shipping. There is also a tier that will net backers a complete copy of Pillars of Eternity along with its two expansions The White March Part I and Part II for $79. Additional perks at higher tiers include digital guidebooks, digital soundtracks, special in-game items, and Early Access when available. The campaign for the game ends on February 24, 2017.
