A new wrinkle has been added to Square Enix's Ikenie to Yuki no Setsuna (or Project Setsuna outside of Japan). In order to learn new techniques, characters may equip various Gems, which may be freely switched out at any time, a mechanic not entirely new to Square Enix RPGs. As characters level up, they learn to equip more Gems at any given time.
The effects of Gems range from magical spells, to recovery abilities, to combat bonuses. "Wall", for example, reduced damages received, while "Avenger" reflects said damage back at the enemy. "Firebit" increases a character's fire attack attribute, while "Harvest" restores health points upon defeating an enemy. Some Gems even have further, altered effects when used successfully with the timed-button Setsuna system; for instance, "Sacred" completely heals HP while it attacks when used with the Setsuna system.
Lastly, artwork has surfaced introducing a mysterious villain known as Scythe Man. An emotionless menace, his sole purpose is to hunt and kill Setsuna and players should expect to have numerous run-ins with him.
Ikenie to Yukie no Setsuna will release in Japan on February 18, 2016 on PlayStation 4 and PS Vita.
