The new Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 4 was on display at PAX East and we got the chance to play through the demo. Taking place immediately after the end of the previous game, the first part of the demo has you exploring the Underhell as Gabe and Dr. Blood. The game plays similar to Rain-Slick 3, with a few noticeable differences. For starters, there is now a classic styled world map to explore with stationary enemies you can fight similar to normal locations in the game.
Combat itself has the biggest change over the previous entry. You now control monsters in battle, instead of the characters themselves. These monsters gain certain abilities based on what character is controlling them, in addition to a selection of abilities specific to the monster. Other than that battle stay familiar, with the same system of gaining 1 MP every turn and HP restoring after each battle.
Plenty of fresh humor was on display, with new monsters, dialog, etc. on display. A demon train sequence reminiscent of one of the most famous parts of Final Fantasy VI was teased, but the demo switches to different characters before it starts. Fans of the previous game should have plenty to look forward to when Penny Arcade's On the Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness 4 launches on PC and Xbox Live Indie Games this spring.
