Dark Souls

In this week's issue of Famitsu, there is a preview for what was formally known as Project Dark. Namco Bandai has announced that Dark Souls is the new official name of the spiritual successor to Demon's Souls.

Dark Souls will attempt to expand the amount of field exploration and provide a seamless experience. This means that whatever can be seen in the distance can be explored. There will be no map display, but the game will have a positional marker for navigation. Dark Souls is said to offer a more challenging experience, but will continue to reward players as they succeed.

The gameplay will be similar to Demon's Souls as being a trial and error experience. However, it will not share the same world or story as it's predecessor. The world will also not be connected by a hub. Instead, all maps will connect together, making the game more about exploration and self-discovery, focusing on more complex level and dungeon designs. It will be closer to a dark medieval high-fantasy setting.

Finally, the game will no longer be class-based, and there will be much more freedom in terms of playstyle. There will also be plenty of weapons, items and spells to obtain, and the online components will be similar to that of Demon's Souls, meaning there will be both co-op and PvP. Soul Tendency has also been removed, dropping the need for dedicated servers. The game will allow players a more mutual role-playing experience via features yet to be announced.
