World of Warcraft

On January 10, 2005, Blizzard Entertainment announced that it had sold more than 600,000 copies of World of Warcraft to buyers across North America, Australia, and New Zealand. During the winter holidays, the MMORPG, made online gaming history by achieving a rate of over 200,000 simultaneous players.

"The public’s response to World of Warcraft has been simply amazing," said Mike Morhaime, president of Blizzard Entertainment. "We are very proud and excited to see such an overwhelming demand for the game, and we hope that the enthusiasm continues to build as we further enhance our online service."

The addition of several new servers to the World of Warcraft network is in progress due to the overwhelming numbers of incoming gamers; and if all goes well with them, Blizzard Entertainment has plans to start making addtional shipments of the game to stores nationwide. Meanwhile, the company is still constantly introducing new game features to World of Warcraft. Some of these features have already been put into place since the official launch, but many more are scheduled for the game's overall lifetime. Not too far off, for instance, is the Player-versus-Player (PvP) Battlegrounds, where members of the Alliance and the Horde will be able to face-off with each other on a battlefield. A PvP Reward System to go alongside this new game feature is also slated for the near future.
