Nintendo Stonewalls Square

Nintendo president Hiroshi Yamauchi, it seems, is not a man who takes being betrayed lightly. Apparently still smarting from the manner in which Square bailed out on Nintendo in favour of the Playstation back in 1996, Yamauchi stated today in an interview with Bloomberg Japan that there was little likelihood of a contract between Nintendo and Square, contrary to what Square executives have been saying recently. In Yamauchi's words, "We do not have a contract with Square, and do not plan to even consider a contract in the future...[Square] is free to say whatever they want, but we have no intention of signing a contract, and there's little chance of one being signed in the future."

Whether this is a knee-jerk reaction by Yamauchi remains to be seen, but at this point, it appears he is fairly adamant in his disdain for Square, who at this point have yet to respond to the statement. Unfortunately, this casts into doubt the future of the handheld Final Fantasy titles Square expressed interest in developing for Nintendo's Game Boy Advance, since in Square's opinion, the Wonderswan Color is likely not advanced enough to serve as an adequate platform for the games. RPGamer will continue to follow this story as it develops.
