Star Wars Galaxies Q&A

In a recent post at Sony's The Station message board, Star Wars Galaxies Creative Director Raph Koster answers some questions about Star Wars Galaxies, the upcoming massively-multiplayer online RPG set in the Star Wars universe. Most of the questions deal with the game's handling of the ability to kill other players, but there are other questions related to the similarities between Star Wars Galaxies and other popular MMORPGs such as EverQuest.

Some excerpts from the post:

Q: How do you plan on addressing camping (the practice of hiding in one spot and waiting for a player to arrive, then killing him/her and taking his/her items)?

A: By not having it. We haven't stated the exact methods for spawning (and I don't know if we ever will!) because we don't want the game to feel mechanistic in that way. We've stated we want the environment to be dynamic, and that includes spawns. Also, this is not an item-driven game, so camping for an uberlightsaber won't happen.

Q: Will there be a lot of times where players are waiting for something to happen?

A: Hope not. Not planning for it. We know the problems that exist in other games, and intend to tackle them. Remember, this is an experienced team who has been through the grinder with multiple (online games) (in the aggregate, of course).

Star Wars Galaxies is currently in development from Verant Interactive, creators of the popular MMORPG EverQuest. Most information about the game is currently unknown, including an expected North American release date. Stay tuned to RPGamer for more information as it becomes available.
