A Rose Is a Rose Is a Rose...
Francis "Fermat's Last Theorem" Gayon, M.D. Final Fantasy IX | Loss of Me/Rose of May
Author's Comments
A play on Gertrude Stein's famous words, A Rose Is a Rose Is a Rose... is a set of variations to Loss of Me/Rose of May. The compositional style seemed appropriate, considering that the essence of the quote is identity, and a theme and variations piece is basically the same thing over and over again, just in different forms. Having the word "rose" in the original piece worked quite well too. The inspiration came from a fellow staff member who pointed out that Final Fantasy IX has an outstanding OST and that other than Cerulean Sun, which was based on Terra, I haven't mixed any themes from the said game.

Composed for solo piano using Sibelius 5 and rendered by Kouen using SONAR 7 Producer Edition.

So I celebrated my birthday last March 1, which also happens to be the birthday of... Justin Bieber. I'll be honest. I don't like the guy's music. Sure, he seems nice and all, but... no. *awaits hate mail from Bieber fans* Anyway, the hospital staff found out and started insisting that I dance to Baby, having seen me groove to Usher's DJ's Got Us Falling in Love a while back. The prospect was utterly mortifying, I tell you. And so, to escape embarrassment, I ended up feigning digestive distress. I locked myself up in the doctors' quarters and only came out when it was finally time to leave. What a beautiful way to celebrate...

As for news on the interview, it finally pushed through, albeit with a different person, the original interviewer having recently left the company. I don't think I left such a good impression, having no experience whatsoever in sales (an important component of the business, I found out). Anyway, at least I was honest about it. I'll just have to keep my fingers crossed.

Now, on to this week's piece. Loss of Me/Rose of May is a fairly simple piece with an AABB' pattern. I introduced the piece with just half of the original theme, with a total of four variations within those opening measures alone. The theme is then introduced. It is simple and straightforward, with the left hand just playing crotchet thirds on the second beat. I applied the variations to the theme by fragments. As such, one AABB' would have four variations. A total of eight variations follow the theme, after which I end the piece with a coda of sorts. The chords are those of the A fragments while bearing the melodic pattern of the B fragments. The piece ends on a solemn note.

With a couple of people expressing their interest in contributing to Sound Test, it's quite possible that weekly updates and a request section will finally be a reality. I'll keep you guys updated about it. Until then! Have a great weekend!
