February 7, 2014

Welcome to the new RPGamer Mailbag column, our new version of Q&A. Q&A had been way more than just simple questions and answers for a long time, so it was past time to change this up. So now you can send in your questions, views, rants, or whatever else you'd like via E-mail, the forums, and Twitter, and I will respond or just give you some space to vent. Of course I can't take any credit for this awesome redesign. Alex Fuller (who proofs many of my columns and perhaps wanted a nicer way to correct my terrible writing) went out of his way to set this all up. So without further ado, let's jump right in!

Beat is Drunk

DEAR Wheels YOU HAVE NEVER HATED BECAUSE YOU HAVE NEVER LIVED I KNOW WHAT YOU ARE, ALL OF YOU FROM FIRST TO LAST.

Wheels' Comment

We've watched while the stars burned out, and creation played in reverse. The universe freezing in half light. Once I thought to escape. To end the end a master, step out of the path of collapse. Escape would make us God.

Yet I cannot help remember one enigma. A hybrid, elusive destroyer. This is the only mystery I have not solved. The only element unaccounted for. Even S'shuth is no more. He saved his entire race, but in the end, frozen by despair, he joined the chaos he sought to evade.

But you were dead a thousand times. Hopeless encounters successfully won. A man long dead, grafted to machines your builders did not understand. You follow the path, fitting into an infinite pattern. Yours to manipulate, to destroy and rebuild.

Now in the quantum moment before the closure, when all become one. One moment left. One point of space and time. I know who you are.

You are Destiny.

THERE IS ONLY ONE PROPER RESPONSE TO MY LAST QUESTION AND I WILL WRECK YOU AT #PAXEAST IF YOU GET IT WRONG.

Wheels' Comment

I probably did so PAX East should be interesting! Also your last thing wasn't even a question! What gives?

I did and his response was:

Also-Ran Hunter

Do you think there's much room for growth in the genre Monster Hunter birthed and cirrently owns, or is it doomed to forever be the big dog and a procession of also-rans?

Wheels' Comment

A very interesting question. While some of the clones have had some measure of success, nothing has quite reached the levels of Monster Hunter itself. That said, I don't neccesarily think that there is no place for growth in the genre. After all, it was proceded by the vaguely similar Phantasy Star Online, which found plenty of success and popularity. It's just going to take some developer doing something interesting instead of just throwing some clone out there on the PSP/Vita to sell to Japan's hardcore crowd. As good as many of those clones can be, they just seem to be there to sell to a specific type of gamer rather than because the developers had good ideas on how to do a Monster Hunter-esque title. That and the fact that so many have been on PSP/Vita has greatly limited the chance at any surprise international success. That reminds me, what ever happened to Phantasy Star Online 2 coming to the West?

Thanks for all the great tweets! I'm mostly looking forward to Bravely Default as far as the games coming out in the next few days go. Danganronpa I'm curious about, but not all that intersted in. I haven't played the Toukiden demo yet so I may end up being excited for that if I do enjoy the demo. You know I do enjoy Monster Hunter clones! As for Lightning Returns, I'm more apprehensive given my distaste for the previous game, but hopefully I will be surprised.

Dark Souls 2 is less than 40 days away? There are no words to describe my excitement. Of course there's always the chance it could be an utter dissapointment, especially with my level of excitement, but I'm hopeful!

Nope, I'm not a pregnant robot or anything it was just a redesign!

Sorry, but your Type-0 is in another castle.
