It is a large development with the size of 4 CD-ROM. It is compatible with the dual shock analogue controller and the PocketStation. It requires 1 block of memory for saving the game, and 9 blocks if you want to play the PocketStation minigame, Moguuru Dabas. For more information, please read my review, my complete Walkthrough and my List of Star Dusts. The most updated versions for them are posted to GameFAQs at http://www.gamefaqs.com. When I first played the Legend of Dragoon, I thought, well, a difficult RPG at last. Indeed, the game remains pretty difficult when you proceed. Not only are the enemies difficult, the "Additional" system can create infinite frustrations for novice. However, once you have got a few Dragon Spirit and mastered a few of the Additional skills, the game will become much more fun to play. The idea of this document is to give you a few hints on the skills while listing out the results of all those hard time. (Yeah, at last, I managed to master all the Additional skills.) *Note* This guide is written based on the Japanese version of the game. Some of the features may change when the game is translated. Also, I have tried my best to translate the names of the skills. It may not be totally correct. I put [square brackets] around names I am not too confident with.* I do make mistakes. If you spot any errors in this document, please send me an email. Any positive suggestions are welcomed. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- PLAYER CHARACTERS: There are 9 player characters in the game. Each has his / her own speciality as well as Additional Skills and Dragoon Magic. Each character is associated with an element. The elements are Fire, Water, Wind, Earth, Light, Dark, Thunder and Void. Fire is an opposing element of Water, Wind is against Earth, Light is against Dark. Thunder and Void have no opposing element. When a target is attacked by a character with opposing element, it takes 50% extra damage, but when a target is attacked by a character with the same element, it takes only half the normal damage. Anyway, here are the characters: Dart - Hero of the game. His parents were killed by the "Dark Devil" when he was 5 years old. He is now a traveller of the world to seek out the murderers of his parents. As for all heroes, this guy has average statistics making him the most useful character in the game. Not that you have any choice at all, because you are not allowed to remove him from the party. Consequently, he will become the toughest character (in terms of HP). Dart has the Fire element and fights with a large sword. (What else can a hero has?) Ravits - Captain of the First Cavalry Squadron of the Dukedom of [Bajel]. He is most trusted by King Albert who is also his personal friend. He has pretty good statistics for physical attacks and physical defences, while his magic attacks and defences are on the poor side. His speed is also quite low. This guy is very useful against normal enemies especially if he has some speed-boost accessories equipped. He may suffer when fighting against magic using bosses. He has a useful Dragoon magic that can halves all damages inflicted to the party for 3 turns. Ravits has the Wind element and fights with a spear. Shana - Heroine of the game. She is the daughter of the village chief of the Village [Celes]. Shana is Dart's childhood sweetheart since they grow up together in the same village. Shana has a mysterious power within her and it is the reason for her capture in the beginning of the game. Shana has good magic attack and defence, but is otherwise a poor character to use. Her physical defence and HP are too low. While she cannot use Additionals, her physical attacks are also pretty powerless. She is only good as Dragoon when she will have access to the healing magic spells. Shana has the Light element and fights with bows and arrows. (For some reason, she seems to have an infinite supply of arrows...) RosŽ - A mysterious and attractive woman who saved Dart's life in the beginning of the game. RosŽ has some above average statistics. She is good at both normal and magical battles. Her speed is on the average, but her HP is on the low side. She is quite useful in the beginning of the game because she has a Dragoon magic spell that can drain HP from an enemy target. RosŽ has the Dark element and fights with a short sword. Hatchel - An old man who travelled around the world looking for his runaway daughter. He met Dart once while travelling. They met again in a hero's contest in the Commercial city of Loan where he will join the party. Hatchel is strong in physical but weak in magic. His HP is only average, but he is pretty fast. Hatchel has the Thunder element and fights with martial arts. (Why are old men always associated with martial arts?) Albert - King of the Dukedom of [Bajel] and Ravits' best friend. He joins the party to chase the enemies who killed his friend and stolen the Moon's artefact. His statistics and battle styles are exactly the same as Ravits. Meru - A cheerful dancer from the Flower Capital of [Donau]. She joins the party because of curiosity. (Her costume is pretty indecent. I wonder what sort of dancer she is.) Meru is very strong in magic but is hopeless in physical. She is the fastest character, but also has the lowest HP. She can be quite powerful if she has the right equipment and having all the Additional mastered. Meru has the Water element and fights with a hammer (which is obviously too heavy for her). Kongol - The last of the Giganto race. Early in the game, you will have to fight him as boss. He joins Dart because he thinks they are much better people than the previous people he worked with. Kongol is pretty strong in physical but is hopeless in magic. His HP is above average, but he is the slowest character in the game. He has the least number of Additional skills and Dragoon Magic spells. Give him some speed boost equipment to make him useful. Kongol has the Earth element and fights with an axe. (It is always like that. He is pretty difficult when you fight him as boss. But his power seems to have diminished after he has joined your party.) Miranda - The First Holy Lady in [Mir-Sezo]. She is a powerful woman in many sense. (I think She is also quite rude. She slaps anyone who makes mistakes.) She joins the party after the release of the Divine Dragon. Her attack styles and statistics are exactly the same as Shana's. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- HINTS ON ADDITIONAL: Perhaps the most powerful and unique feature of the game is the Additional system. Unlike other turn-based RPG, the Additional system requires the feedback from the player after the "Attack" command is chosen. Characters in the Legend of Dragoon attack using a combo style, rather similar to the Legaia Legend or Xenogears. However, unlike those two, the Additional system requires real time feedback from the player. The real time feedback is also known as "Timing Input". When not in battles, you can access the Additional menu by going into the main menu. There, you will see a list of Additional skills each of your characters has learnt so far. The list gives you the name of each Additional skill, the "Add" attribute (the number of Timing Inputs required to complete the combo), the level of the Additional, the SP attribute (the amount of Spirit Point acquired for the complete combo) and the Damage Bonus for completing the combo. Before battles, you will have to choose an Additional skill for each character in the Additional menu. When you enter a battle, the character will then attack with the style governed by the selected Additional skill. You cannot change the attack style during battle. When you select Attack, you will get a little red square at the centre of the screen. A larger rotating square will collapse into the centre square. You are supposed to press the OK button just before they overlap. If you get the timing right, the combo will move on, but if you get it wrong, the combo will stop immediately. If you have got all the timing correctly, the character will shout out the name of the Additional, and the name will appear at the bottom right hand corner. Sometimes, enemies will counter attack, and the red square will change its colour to blue. Try not to panic and press the Cancel button as you do normally. If you get it right, you should be able to continue with the combo. If you miss, your character will get thrown off by the enemy and he / she will be damaged. When you first learnt an Additional skill, it begins at level 1. Each time you complete the combo, you will gain in one point of "experience". The level of the skill will increase by 1 for every 20 "experience" points gained by completing the combo. The maximum level is 5 after completing the combo for 80 times. (The counter goes up to 99, but it does not seem to make any difference after 80.) Gaining level for an Additional will usually increases both its SP attribute and its damage bonus. Usage Level 0 - 19 times 1 20 - 39 times 2 40 - 59 times 3 60 - 79 times 4 80 - 99 times 5 It can take a long time learning and mastering the Additionals. Once you have learnt them, however, you will definitely have a much better time fighting the bosses and other enemies. In my experience, it is very much easier to get the timing input right if you are watching the characters / enemies sideways. You can change the camera angle by pressing R2 while it is a character's turn. The correct camera angle is usually the one that captures the battlefield from above. You can use a Fighter's Guidance or a Fighter's Ultimate to train your characters. The latter can be obtained from a the Ghost Ship if you bother to open the combo-locked chest for the fifth time. With one of these accessories equipped, you will not have to do any Timing Input for the character when he / she uses his / her Additional. He / she will automatically perform the full combo. This is particularly useful when you are trying to train a charatcer for an Additional with difficult Timing Inputs. The only difference with the two is that the former will decrease the damage and the SP of the Additional skill by half while you are having it equipped. The latter does not have any penalty. However, I don't recommend these accessories too much, because it spoils the fun for the game. Here are some hints for individual characters: -Dart- Being the hero of the game, Dart has the biggest number of Additionals. There are 7 of them and I think most of them are quite easy and straight forward. You only need some practice on the timing, and you will find yourself mastering each one of them pretty quickly. I do advice mastering all his Additionals, since you are stuck with him for the whole game. -Ravits / Albert- Ravits learns most of his Additional skills at pretty low levels. So, it seems that he can become pretty powerful at an early stage of the game. Well, there is a catch, of course. Ravits' Additionals are easy enough to learn. But once he left the party, Albert will replace him. While they share the same statistics, Albert's attack styles are much faster. In my opinion, Albert's Additional are the most difficult to learn if you have to learn them. Most of them require lots of trials and errors before you will be able to master them. Once mastered, however, these Additionals can deal huge amount of damages. My advice is to have Ravits master all his Additional whenever you have the chance. It will save a lot of time having to master the same skills with Albert. -Shana / Miranda- Shana and Miranda cannot use Additionals. -RosŽ- RosŽ has only 4 Additional skills. Her skills are quite easy to learn if she does not get counter attacked all the time. She can become pretty powerful when all her skills are mastered. -Hatchel- Hatchel's Additional skills are quite powerful. Since he is a speedy guy, all his skills are quite fast as well. It will probably take many trials and errors before you will get the timing inputs correctly. Once you master his skills, you will have a much better time with the other characters. -Meru- Meru's Additional skills are pretty easy to master. Even with all those horrible counter attacks, you will be able to master her skills pretty quickly. Her last Additional seems impressive, with a 600% damage bonus at level 5, but since she is actually quite weak physically, the actual damage is not really that impressive. -Kongol- Kongol only has 3 Additional skills, all of which are pretty easy to master, because they are quite slow and none of them can be countered. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- LIST OF ADDITIONAL: *I have included a difficulty rating for each Additional. The rating marks how difficult it is to complete the combo. The easiest combo has a rating of 1 and the most difficult has a rating of 5. This rating is my own opinion, so feel free to disagree. Also, when I say "master", it means "to get an Additional skill to level 5".* -DART- Double Cut - Learn: Initial Ability - Add: 1 Lvl SP Damage 1 35 150% 2 35 157% 3 35 165% 4 35 180% 5 35 202% Difficulty: 1 Volcano - Learn: Level 2 - Add: 3 Lvl SP Damage 1 20 200% 2 24 210% 3 28 220% 4 32 230% 5 36 250% Difficulty: 2 Panic Rush - Learn: Level 8 - Add: 2 Lvl SP Damage 1 30 150% 2 45 150% 3 60 150% 4 75 150% 5 102 150% Difficulty: 1 Clash Dance - Learn: Level 15 - Add: 4 Lvl SP Damage 1 50 150% 2 60 172% 3 75 195% 4 85 217% 5 100 250% Difficulty: 2 Madness Hero - Learn: Level 22 - Add: 5 Lvl SP Damage 1 60 100% 2 90 100% 3 120 100% 4 150 100% 5 204 100% Difficulty: 4 Moon Strike - Learn: Level 29 - Add: 6 Lvl SP Damage 1 20 200% 2 20 240% 3 20 280% 4 20 320% 5 20 350% Difficulty: 4 Flame Dynamic - Learn: Master all of the above - Add: 7 Lvl SP Damage 1 100 250% 2 110 300% 3 120 350% 4 130 400% 5 150 450% Difficulty: 4 -RAVITS / ALBERT- Hard Bone - Learn: Initial Ability - Add: 1 Lvl SP Damage 1 34 100% 2 38 110% 3 42 120% 4 45 130% 5 50 150% Difficulty: 1 Spinning Cane - Learn: Level 5 - Add: 2 Lvl SP Damage 1 35 100% 2 35 125% 3 35 150% 4 35 175% 5 35 200% Difficulty: 1 Rod Typhoon - Learn: Level 7 - Add: 4 Lvl SP Damage 1 30 150% 2 45 162% 3 60 174% 4 75 186% 5 100 202% Difficulty: 2 for Ravits and 4 for Albert Gale's Dance - Learn: Level 11 - Add: 6 Lvl SP Damage 1 35 200% 2 35 240% 3 35 280% 4 35 320% 5 35 350% Difficulty: 3 for Ravits and 5 for Albert Cherry Blossom Storm - Learn: Master all of the above - Add: 7 Lvl SP Damage 1 60 300% 2 90 324% 3 120 348% 4 150 372% 5 202 405% Difficulty: 3 for Ravits and 5 for Albert -SHANA / MIRANDA- -ROSƒ- Whip Smack - Learn: Initial Ability - Add: 1 Lvl SP Damage 1 35 100% 2 35 125% 3 35 150% 4 35 175% 5 35 200% Difficulty: 1 More and More - Learn: Level 14 - Add: 2 Lvl SP Damage 1 30 150% 2 45 150% 3 60 150% 4 75 150% 5 102 150% Difficulty: 1 Hard Core Blade - Learn: Level 19 - Add: 5 Lvl SP Damage 1 35 100% 2 35 150% 3 35 200% 4 35 250% 5 35 300% Difficulty: 3 Demon's Dance - Learn: Master all of the above - Add: 7 Lvl SP Damage 1 100 200% 2 100 280% 3 100 360% 4 100 440% 5 100 500% Difficulty: 5 -HATCHEL- [Two Consecutive Hits] - Learn: Initial Ability - Add: 1 Lvl SP Damage 1 35 100% 2 38 110% 3 42 120% 4 45 130% 5 50 150% Difficulty: 1 [Three Roads' Crossing] - Learn: Level 14 - Add: 2 Lvl SP Damage 1 20 150% 2 20 162% 3 20 174% 4 20 186% 5 20 202% Difficulty: 3 [Four Immortals Summon] - Learn: Level 18 - Add: 3 Lvl SP Damage 1 50 100% 2 61 100% 3 75 100% 4 86 100% 5 100 100% Difficulty: 3 [Five Wheels Infinite Break] - Learn: Level 22 - Add: 4 Lvl SP Damage 1 35 150% 2 35 187% 3 40 225% 4 45 262% 5 50 300% Difficulty: 3 [Six Ways Seven Lives] - Learn: Level 27 - Add: 6 Lvl SP Damage 1 15 200% 2 15 250% 3 15 300% 4 15 350% 5 15 400% Difficulty: 5 [Eight Wire One Kick] - Learn: Master all of the above - Add: 7 Lvl SP Damage 1 50 300% 2 75 345% 3 100 390% 4 125 435% 5 150 501% Difficulty: 4 -MERU- Double Spank - Learn: Initial Ability - Add: 1 Lvl SP Damage 1 20 100% 2 24 110% 3 28 120% 4 32 130% 5 34 150% Difficulty: 1 [Straighten] - Learn: Level 21 - Add: 3 Lvl SP Damage 1 35 150% 2 43 162% 3 51 174% 4 59 186% 5 70 202% Difficulty: 1 [Cool Buggy] - Learn: Level 26 - Add: 4 Lvl SP Damage 1 60 100% 2 90 100% 3 120 100% 4 150 100% 5 180 100% Difficulty: 2 [Catch Cradle] - Learn: Level 30 - Add: 4 Lvl SP Damage 1 20 150% 2 20 195% 3 20 240% 4 20 285% 5 20 351% Difficulty: 4 Parky Step - Learn: Master all of the above - Add: 7 Lvl SP Damage 1 100 200% 2 100 300% 3 100 400% 4 100 500% 5 100 600% Difficulty: 5 -KONGOL- Added Attack - Learn: Initial Ability - Add: 1 Lvl SP Damage 1 35 100% 2 38 110% 3 42 120% 4 45 130% 5 50 150% Difficulty: 1 Inferno - Learn: Level 23 - Add: 3 Lvl SP Damage 1 20 100% 2 20 125% 3 20 150% 4 20 170% 5 20 200% Difficulty: 2 Bone Break - Learn: Master all of the above - Add: 7 Lvl SP Damage 1 100 200% 2 100 220% 3 100 240% 4 100 260% 5 100 300% Difficulty: 4 ------------------------------------------------------------------------- LOCATION OF DRAGON SPIRIT: Once a character has obtained his / her Dragon Spirit, he / she will be able to transform into the powerful dragoon during battles. Here are the locations of the Dragon Spirits: Red Eye Dragon (Fire) - Dart has it at the beginning. He will be able to use it after fighting Kongol for the first time. Dark Dragon (Dark) - RosŽ has it when she joins the party. Green Dragon (Wind) - After fighting [Graham] in the [Dragon's Lair], Ravits will inherit the Dragon Spirit of the Green Dragon. Silver Dragon (Light) - After "fighting" [Sharlie] at the [Temple of Sharlie], the Dragon Spirit will be given to your party. Shana will then inherit it. Purple Electric Dragon (Thunder) - After fighting [Doyle] in the [Capital City of Cathas - Black Castle], Hatchel will inherit it. Sea Wave Dragon (Water) - After fighting Leenus in [Mount Dead Dragon], Meru will inherit it. Golden Dragon (Earth) - After getting Kongol, enter the Commercial City of Loan and proceed to the second screen, you will get a sequence with a merchant. After the sequence, he will sell you the Dragon Spirit for 1000G. Ouch! Divine Dragon - After a boss fight in The Setting Moon (Final Dungeon). ------------------------------------------------------------------------- SPIRIT POINT AND DRAGOON LEVEL: A character needs to obtain Spirit Points (SP) before he or she will be able to transform into a mighty dragoon. You gain SP mainly by using normal attacks (hence, Additionals). Each time your character scores a hit, he / she will be able to gain in some SP. The amount is determined by the particular Additional combo the character has chosen. Obviously, a completed combo will gain the character a larger amount of SP. The amount of SP gained will also increase with the level of the Additional. *Note: An archer (i.e. Shana / Miranda) will always gain in an amount of SP that is equal to a quarter of her maximum SP.* Some special equipment will allow damage to be converted to SP, and some will charge up a character's SP per turn. Spirit Potion can also be used to recover SP for a character. Minimum SP required to transform is 100. A character consumes 100 SP for each action perform when he / she is a Dragoon. Each character has his / her own Dragoon Level. The Dragoon Level of a character starts at 1 when he / she first obtain his / her Dragon Spirit. To gain in Dragoon Levels, simply have the character gain in more SP. Each SP gained during battle will be converted into a hidden "experience" point. Once you have gained enough SP, the Dragoon Level of the character will increase. The maximum Dragoon Level is 5. *Note: You can still gain in "experience" for your Dragoon Level when a character's SP is at his / her current maximum. While your current SP will not increase, gained SP will still be converted into "experience" for the Dragoon Level.* There are 3 advantages in gaining Dragoon Level. Firstly, the character will learn new Dragoon Magic at higher Dragoon Level. Secondly, the character will have a bigger boost in his / her statistics when he / she is in the Dragoon form. Lastly, the maximum MP and SP of the character will increase. However, there is a catch. Once a character is transformed, he / she will not be able to turn back to normal until he / she has exhausted all his / her SP. So, a Level 5 Dragoon with full SP will only transform back after 5 consecutive turns or until the battle ends. (Of course, he / she will turn back to normal when he / she dies.) Not only that, as Dragoon, you will not get the benefit from some of the equipped accessories, nor will you be able to use the commands "Defend", "Item" and "Escape". So, think carefully and plan your strategy before turning the characters into dragoons while engaging with a powerful boss! In general: At Dragoon Level 1 - maximum MP: 20 - maximum SP: 100 At Dragoon Level 2 - maximum MP: 40 - maximum SP: 200 At Dragoon Level 3 - maximum MP: 60 - maximum SP: 300 At Dragoon Level 4 - maximum MP: 80 - maximum SP: 400 At Dragoon Level 5 - maximum MP: 100 - maximum SP: 500 When all the characters are at maximum SP, a new command "Special" will appear. "Special" will transform all characters to Dragoon, and the background will switch to the colour of the character who chose the command. (The background will switch back when this character transforms back.) All Dragoon Additional performed by this character will be perfect and all his / her attacks will become more powerful. When a character is transformed to Dragoon, he / she will automatically be cured of all the bad statuses. In addition, characters as Dragoons are immune to all negative status attacks (except instant death attacks). Always enter a boss fight with everyone at maximum SP. It does make a big difference. If the SP of your character is low, fight some random encounters before engaging with the boss. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- DRAGOON ADDITIONAL AND DRAGOON MAGIC: There are only two commands available for a transformed character. A Dragoon can either attack with Dragoon Additional or use Dragoon Magic. Both Dragoon Additional and Dragoon Magic will consume 100 SP. (The latter will also consume various amount of MP.) Unlike normal Additionals, Dragoon Additionals are fixed, and your Dragoons will be stuck with the same Additionals for the whole game. (Once again, the archers cannot perform Additionals. As Dragoons, they will still attack normally.) With the exception of Kongol, all Dragoon Additionals are 5 hit combos (4 + 1). Kongol's Dragoon Additional only has 4 hits (3 + 1). When you choose to use Additional, you will get a radar looking gauge at the top right hand side of the screen. Press the OK button to start the gauge. A pointer will spin around the circumference of the gauge. You are supposed to press the OK button when the pointer goes through the top (i.e. at 12 o'clock). If you manage to do this 4 times (3 in Kongol's case), you will get the word "Perfect", and you will get a nice complete combo with the most damage. Otherwise, your character will only perform part of the combo. Sadly, Dragoon Additionals are actually less powerful than the best human Additional. All the Dragoon Magic spells look pretty impressive, but not all of them are useful. Here is what I think: Dart - Final Bust is probably the spell you will use all the time. It is powerful especially when you have Dart turned on a "Special". It does not cost very much MP, and is singly targeted - perfect for boss fights. Don't bother with the summon. It simply consumes too much MP. Ravits / Albert - Flower Storm is one of the most useful spells in the game. It halves all damage done to your characters for 3 turns. It can make a difference when you are in a difficult situation. The other spells are reasonable, but since these guys are not very strong in magic, it is sometimes much better to stick with physical attacks. Shana / Miranda - Most of their spells are curative. Have these women in your party if you think you will need healing all the time. RosŽ - Astral Drain is useful. While it consumes very little MP, it can do a reasonable amount of damage. The best thing is that the damage will then be converted back into HP to be shared between the allies. Her other spells are not very useful. Hell's Gate would have been nice, but it does not work with bosses and so its use is limited. Hatchel - All Thunder spells are single target attacks. They have some potentials if Hatchel is more powerful in Magic. Meru - Even though she is pretty strong in Magic, none of her attack spells are really that useful. It is a real shame. Her only one curative spell Rainbow Blazes, however, may be useful in some situations. Kongol - He only has 3 spells instead of the normal four and all of them target all enemies. They all look pretty impressive, but none of them are powerful because Kongol is pretty weak in magic. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- LIST OF DRAGOON MAGIC: -DART- Flame Shot - Learn: Dragoon Level 1 - MP: 10 Fire elemental attack on a single target.
