RPGamer recently interviewed Norihiko Ushimura, the producer of the upcoming PSP title The Legend of Heroes: A Tear of Vermillion. As one of the few RPGs for the PSP, this game promises to help fill out the game libraries of PSP owners. For more information on The Legend of Heroes, please look over RPGamer’s impression of the game.

RPGamer: Many thanks for taking the time out of your schedule to talk with us. Could you please introduce yourself, and explain your relation to Legend of Heroes?
Norihiko Ushimura: I am Norihiko Ushimura, the producer.

RPGamer: It was revealed that Legend of Heroes for PSP is actually the second title in the Legend of Heroes Trilogy. The visuals look very sharp and their quality seems to surpass that of the Legend of Heroes III screenshots that we have seen. Have any graphical updates been applied to the PSP release?
Norihiko Ushimura: The 3D polygon maps and animations seen throughout the game are high quality components that take advantage of the PSP features.

RPGamer: In the same vein as our previous question. Has any content or features been added to Legend of Heroes that was not in its original incarnation?
Norihiko Ushimura: We have taken advantage of the PSP features to enhance the maps. Maps were drawn using 3D polygons so these images add to the experience of the surrounding world. The battle system is also a command style turn based battle system, making it easier to play on the portable system. Also, having pets such as dogs, cats, and rabbits accompany you on your adventure adds some element of comfort to the adventure. Depending on the pet’s mood, it may help you find an item.

RPGamer: What was the greatest challenge in localizing Legend of Heroes for the English speaking audience?
Norihiko Ushimura: The massive amount of text to localize.

RPGamer: Legend of Heroes will allow the player to have a pet that will follow them around, and help out the party based on its relationship to the owner. Can you give examples of how the player can build their relationship with their furry/feathered follower? And for those of us on the dark side...can we be mean to the pet?
Norihiko Ushimura: Executing commands such as "Feed," "Praise," and "Scold" will change the pet’s mood and temperament. There are also different types of food you can give your pet. Depending on the type, it will have different effects. So by keeping your pet in a dissatisfied state, you can be mean to it if that's what you want to do!

RPGamer: Do players have the ability to save anywhere, possibly even during battles?
Norihiko Ushimura: On the field, the player will be able to save game play anytime. Saves cannot be conducted during battles or during events.

RPGamer: Early during the title’s transition to the PSP there were reports of long load times and in-game lag problems. Have these issues been resolved?
Norihiko Ushimura: For this title, the player should be able to play the game more smoothly.

RPGamer: It has been reported that Legend of Heroes has at least 50 hours of gameplay. For those that choose to ignore side quests, how long would it take them to complete the game?
Norihiko Ushimura: Approximately 20-30 hours.

RPGamer: If you had to name one thing that sets Legend of Heroes apart from other RPGs, what would it be?
Norihiko Ushimura: As a traditional RPG, I would have to say, the deep and extensive storyline.

RPGamer: Is this title still on schedule for its projected release?
Norihiko Ushimura: This title is scheduled to be released during the second week of November.

RPGamer: Lastly, is there anything that you'd like to say to our readers?
Norihiko Ushimura: Since this is an RPG that can be enjoyed on the portable unit, we hope that the players will become deeply immersed in the storyline while enjoying their personal space in any location.

RPGamer would like to extend its thanks to Norihiko Ushimura for giving us a bit of insight concerning The Legend of Heroes. Keep your eyes peeled for an in-depth review of the title when it is released on November 15.
