Hereunder is a list of the abilities which can be learnt to refine items, and what you can expect to refine from certain items. In brackets, the GF which can learn the previously typed ability is shown. The first column shows the number of items required to refine, the second column shows the item to be refined, the third column shows the number of items refined into and the fourth and final column shows what item is produced by refining. Character cards and GF cards are shown in bold, spaced out lettering. Please note that all refineable items shown are the ones I have been able to find while playing the game. I have not yet found every card, or every item, so I will update this page when I find something new. Please note that all Refines shown are for the GF at Level 100. When a GF is at Level 100, it may be able to refine items that were not refineable at lower Levels. However some monsters have better items to be mugged from them than from refining their card, for example you can Mug a Torama for Regen Rings, but by refining cards, you can get only Life Rings. It is worthwhile collecting cards however, as many weapons can be upgraded early in the game from items refined from cards. Just collect lots of cards, refine them (but always keep one copy of the card!!) and then go to the junk shop and see what there is on offer... you may be surprised!!! There are many many card players in Final Fantasy VIII, some have weak cards, others have very good cards. All his ammo may only be obtained by refining items or cards. Pulse Ammo is also needed to obtain the Lion Heart, Squall's best weapon; you will need 12 Pulse Ammo, so make sure you don't waste any. Fire Ammo causes fire damage to enemies. Demolition Ammo causes high damage to enemies, but the bullets take a long time to fire. AP Ammo causes damage, regardless of whether or not the enemy has armour. In fact, AP stands for Armour Piercing. Pulse Ammo allows you to shoot the bullets out very very quickly. Fast Ammo also allows you to shoot the bullets out quickly, though not as fast as with Pulse Ammo. However Fast Ammo does not cause as much damage as other bullets. Dark Ammo damages enemies, and also causes Status changes. The magic 'Death' inflicts Death onto an enemy, ie: it kills the enemy. However, it does not work on all enemies, and this magic is more useful as a Status Defense Junction. Junction 100 Deaths to your Status Defense, to protect against such spells as Lv5Death (cast by Torama), and Death (cast by Forbidden). Cure, Cura and Curaga spells cure your party, Cure being least effective, Curaga being most effective. Zombie spells turn the enemy into an undead creature, and so it will be hurt more by attacks, and even healing spells like Cure will injure it. The Life spell acts like a Phoenix Down, reviving one of your party from KO, but, as with a Phoenix Down, it only restores a small percentage of their maximum HP. A Full-Life spell is much more effective; it revives a member of your party from KO and restores all their HP. A Regen spell is also useful; if you cast it on a member of your party, they will be healed at regular intervals. A Holy spell causes Holy damage to an enemy. Many enemies are weak against this powerful spell. As you can see from the list above, there are many items that can be refined by this ability. Aura Stones act like Aura spells; Death Stones act like Death Spells; Ultima Stones work like Ultima Spells; Shell Stones work like Shell Spells; Flare Stones work like Flare Spells; Holy Stones work like Holy Spells; Meteor Stones work like Meteor Spells; Protect Stones work like Protect Spells. A Wizard Stone can be refined into many useful spells and items, just look at all these lists. A Phoenix Pinion, when used in battle, summons GF Phoenix, who will revive all KO'd characters, with his 'Rebirth Flame'. After you have used the Pinion once, GF Phoenix will continue to appear at random when all your party is KO'd. A Tent restores HP to all your party. A Cottage restores HP to all your party and all your GFs. A Demi spell removes a quarter of your opponent's HP, but it does not affect all enemies. A Quake spell causes Earth damage to an opponent, it causes an earthquake beneath the enemy/ies. A Double spell helps your party. If you cast it on one of your party, they will be able to cast two magic spells in one round. A Triple spell works in the same way, but three spells can be cast in one go. A Slow spell, when cast on the enemy, slows down their ATB gauge. A Haste spell, when cast on one of your party, speeds up their ATB gauge. A Stop spell, when cast on the enemy, stops their ATB gauge. A Bio spell injures the enemy and causes poison. A Confuse spell makes the enemy lose control. It will attack your party, or even members of its own party, and it will cast any spells, even those which will injure itself, or cure you. A Break spell causes Petrify, ie: the enemy turns to stone. A Pain spell inflicts Poison onto the enemy. A Silence spell makes the enemy unable to use magic. If an enemy casts Silence on one of your party, that person will be unable to use magic and to summon GF. A Blind spell causes the enemies physical attacks to miss (not always however). A Berserk spell makes the enemy use physical attacks only. A Meltdown spell causes the enemy's Vit stat to go down to 0, making it weaker against attacks. However, the Vit stat is at 0 only when the enemy turns a shade of pink. A Sleep spell causes the ATB gauge of the enemy to stop. However, if the enemy is attacked physically, it will wake up. GF, magic or draws will not wake up the enemy. Use this to your advantage. If you junction Sleep to your Status Attack, then hit the enemy, it will fall asleep. Then you can Draw magic from it, without it attacking you. A Shell spell will cut magic damage by half. However, it also decreases the effectiveness of spells like Curaga by half. An Esuna spell acts like a Remedy, ie: it removes status ailments. A Reflect spell reflects away all magic, even Cure/Cura/Curaga/Life/Full-Life, which it will reflect onto the enemy, so if you have a character under Reflect that you need to heal (or Revive), you must use items such as Hi-Potions (or Phoenix Downs). An Aura spell allows the character it is cast on to use their Limit Break more often. If at first the Limit Break does not appear, keep pressing the circle button until it does. A Protect spell will cut damage inflicted by physical attacks by half. A Dispel spell will cancel out any of these spells: Protect, Shell, Reflect, Triple, Double. A Drain spell will absorb HP from the enemy, causing it damage. However the character who cast the spell will gain some HP. Personally, I never use this spell, as Firas, Blizzaras and Thundara are useful for junctioning. A Hi-Potion+ restores 2000HP to one person. An X-Potion restores all HP to one person (like an Elixir). A Remedy+ acts like a Remedy. A Hero-Trial makes one person invincible SOMETIMES. A Hero makes one person invincible. A Holy War-Tril makes all your party invincible SOMETIMES. A Holy War makes all your party invincible. I don't recommend that you waste Heros to get Holy Wars. In fact, in battles, it is better to use Heroes rather than Holy Wars. You may question refining a Meteor Stone into a Meteor SPELL, but I would recommend doing it, because when the Meteor magic is in the form of a spell, you can cast two or three Meteor SPELLS in one go (if that person has Double or Triple). The same holds for Ultima Stones and Ultima Spells. Also, you can then use the newly gained spells for Junctioning.
