*********************************************************************** -Final Fantasy IV Hardtype Strategy Guide- Version 3.0--Completed 9/25/99 *********************************************************************** Compiled by: Emperor Dark E-mail: Emperor_Dark@hotmail.com *********************************************************************** About This Strategy Guide *********************************************************************** Disclaimer: This guide is copyrighted but may be distributed freely under these conditions: 1)This guide remain completely unaltered from its original state, 2)No form of compensation is recieved as a result of distributing this guide, and 3)I am given explicit credit for any information that is extracted from this guide. *********************************************************************** What's New With Version 3.0? (Updated 9/25/99) A new section has been added that features a complete list of what items are sold where and at what price throughout the game. I've also expanded the Cast of Characters section to include a back story for each character (these areas do contain spoilers, so be advised) and made a few corrections to the Equipment list. That's about it for now. *********************************************************************** I decided to write this after realizing that there seemed to be no FAQs on the Internet devoted to the original FF IV (at the time, anyway), although there is an abundance of them focusing on the less-spectacular US version of the game. I repeat, the information presented here does NOT apply to the American FF II. There are plenty of excellent resources already available for that installment of the series (David Callender's FF II walkthrough immediately comes to mind). Rather, this guide was written for the Japanese FF IV (dubbed the 'Hardtype'). If you have a suggestion as to how I can improve on this guide, I urge you to contact me. There's a good chance I will not answer questions dealing with the game itself, though, since experience has taught me that most of these questions can already be answered by carefully reading this document. It should be noted that the names of certain items or enemies (for instance) will not completely coincide with other translations of the original FF IV; rather, the information presented here is based off of my own translation of such aspects of the game. This isn't to say that someone playing FF IV using a translation patch wouldn't be able to use this guide effectively--far from it, since those differences are in all likelihood hardly noticeable. *********************************************************************** Additional Credits: None...yet. *********************************************************************** Contents *********************************************************************** I-Cast of Characters II-A Walkthrough III-Shops IV-Items V-Equipment VI-Enemies VII-Magic VIII-Secrets and Cheats IX-Word Origins *********************************************************************** I. Cast of Characters *********************************************************************** Name: Cecil Harvey Age: 20 Height: 178 cm Weight: 58 kg Right-handed Birthplace: Unknown Special Commands (Dark Knight): Dark Wave: A dark wave is created from the force of Cecil's swordstroke that damages all enemies. Cecil loses some HP's when performing this attack. Special Commands (Paladin): Cover: Cecil will absorb most forms of damage targeted at a specific party member. Story (contains spoilers): In order to fully understand Cecil's past, it is important to cover the history of the Lunarian civilization and its ties with the planet earth. When the planet between Mars and Jupiter was on the verge of being shattered, its inhabitants, the Lunarians, fled to the Earth on spaceships. The Lunarians arrived on earth, only to discover that the planet's inhabitants were still evolving. In order to prevent disturbing this delicate process, they built a second moon where they entered a deep slumber. Among these Lunarians was Zemus, a spite-filled man who sought to make the beautiful planet of earth his own. The manifestation of hatred, Zeromus, took possession through this avarice. While Zemus's body was ultimately forced to sleep, his foul mind remained awake, contemplating the destruction of the inhabitatns of earth. Only a few of the Lunarians, such as Foo-soo-ya, remained awake, anticipating the day when the people of earth would reach their full potential and thus learn to understand the Lunarian race. Foo-soo-ya's brother, Klu-ya, became bored by the humans' slow progress and built a magical ship to take him to earth. On earth he taught the humans several aspects of Lunarian technology, including the airships and the Devil's Road. During this time Klu-Ya fell in love with a human women who later bore him two children--Cecil and Golbeza. At this point Klu-Ya forsees the actions of the dreaded Zemus and travels to Mt. Ordeals to await the day where resolution would be achieved betwen him and his son. While Golbeza ultimately fell under Zemus's sinister influence, Cecil was raised as an orphan until taken in by King Baron early in his life. While under the juristiction of the king Cecil became a Black Knight and toiled through the army's ranks, finally securing himself a position of the Captain of the Red Wings. When Cecil begins to detect the corruption within the kingdom of Baron, he flees and along with his friend Cain sets out to inform other nations of Baron's true motives. The highlight of Cecil's journey occurs when he reaches Mt. Ordeals, where his father, now referred to as "the Light", tests Cecil's spirit. In this Cecil redeems his guilt for the atrocities he committed under King Baron's rule, and is transformed into a Paladin. He also recieves a legendary sword infused with the spirit of his father and upon which is inscribed the Mysidian legend. Eventually Cecil uncovers his father's spaceship and uses it to travel to the Lunarian moon. Here Foo-soo-ya reveals to Cecil the secrets of his past and returns with his party to earth to battle the Giant of Babel, a mechanized devil designated by a Zemus as the catalyst for the destruction of earth. After the giant's destruction, Foo-soo-ya removes Zemus's control over Golbeza's mind and Cecil and his allies return to the moon a second time to defeat the dread force awaiting them there-- the hatred, Zeromus. At the end of the game, Cecil ascends the Baronian throne with Rosa as his queen. *********************************************************************** Name: Cain Highwind Age: 21 Height: 183 cm Weight: 61 kg Left-handed Birthplace: Baron Special Commands: Jump: Cain leaps high into the air and sweeps down on an unsuspecting foe, causing hefty amounts of damage. Cain is invulnerable while he is in the air. Story (contains spoilers): Cain is one of the Dragon Knights of Baron. He is tempted by King Baron to join the Black Knights like his friend Cecil, but refuses because he is intent on following in his father's footsteps. Cain is jealous of Cecil due to his friend's close relationship with Rosa. It is this jealously that allows him to be manipulated by Golbeza. Through this possession we learn that Cain does not love Rosa so much as he is envious of Cecil; while under Golbeza's influence he does not even seem to care that Rosa's life is threatened by the scythe that hovers over her head, but is quite eager to demonstrate his superiority to Cecil, both at the invasion of Fabul and at the events that build up to the confrontation at the Tower of Zot. However, when Golbeza's control is not in effect, Cain appears to be excessively troubled by the harsh actions he commits against both Cecil and Rosa. At the end of the game Cain walks away from the lives of those around him in an effort to strengthen himself as a Dragon Knight, and perhaps to redeem himself for the crimes he committed against his friends. *********************************************************************** Name: Rosa Farrell Age: 19 Height: 162 cm Weight: 47 kg Right-handed Birthplace: Baron Special Commands: Aim: If equipped with a Bow, Rosa can use this attack to increase her hit rate to 100% and boost the damage inflicted by her arrows. Pray: When Rosa uses Pray successfully, the entire party will regain some lost HP's. This technique is not always effective, however. Story (contains spoilers): Rosa is, in many aspects, your standard stereotypical female RPG character. She is Cecil's girlfriend, and as such the root of much of the tension that exists between Cecil and Cain. And as with any stereotypical female RPG character, Rosa has to be rescued--on more than one occassion. However, Rosa is also a very effective user of White Magic, having studied under the white wizards of Baron, and is also extremely talented with a bow and arrows. Little is revealed about Rosa's past. Her father was apparently a great knight who was killed when Rosa was still little; as such, Rosa's mother appears to be quite protective of her, showing great distraught when she learns that Rosa was kidnapped by Golbeza. Rosa's relationship with her mother is never fully built upon, but she is especially close to Cecil, running after him when he leaves Baron and remaining with him for a great deal of the game. The reasoning behind her overbearing nature is never fully explained; one could assume that the death of Rosa's father caused her to channel all of her energies on Cecil. Rosa ascends the throne of Baron at the end of the game, with Cecil at her side. *********************************************************************** Name: Gilbert Chris von Muir Age: 24 Height: 174 cm Weight: 51 kg Right-handed Birthplace: Damcyan Special Commands: Hide: Gilbert hides from the ensuing battle. Medicine: Gilbert restores his party members' HP's. Requires a potion. Sing: Gilbert sings an enchanting melody that can cause various status ailments to befall his unfortunate enemies. Story (contains spoilers): Gilbert is the prince of Damcyan. Becoming tired of the hassles of royal life, he traveled the world under the guise of a singing bard. During his travels he meets a charming woman named Anna, with whom he immediately fell in love. Anna's over-protective father, Tella, became infuriated by this and refused to allow her to continue seeing Gilbert. But Anna and Gilbert were too devoted to one another, and decided to run away. During Golbeza's invasion of Damcyan Anna is mortally wounded as a result of shielding a barrage of arrows directed at Gilbert (this is the first of numerous indications of Gilbert's cowardly nature). When Golbeza and his troops have left and Cecil's party shows up, Tella recognizes his daughter's body and attacks Gilbert in a blind outrage, an attack that is halted only by Anna's dying words. As Tella leaves the party to pursue his revenge on Golbeza, Cecil requests that Gilbert travel with him to the Antlion's Cave to help him obtain the Light of the Desert which he requires to cure a sick Rosa. The night Rosa is recovering from her illness Gilbert is confronted by Anna's spirit, who convinces him to continue to help Cecil on his journey. However, Gilbert is seperated from Cecil when the boat from Fabul is shipwrecked. He ends up in Damcyan, where he undergoes treatment by a doctor in Troia. When Cecil stumbles upon him in Troia Gilbert is too sick to aid the party directly in battle, and instead offers the Paladin a powerful item called the Twinharp. Whenever Gilbert plays his harp, the Twinharp reacts directly. This becomes the key to defeating the Dark Elf; Gilbert's enchanting music is emanated through the Twinharp, causing the Dark Elf's magnetic field to be lifted and providing Cecil and his party with a chance at defeating him. At the end of the game Gilbert returns to his kingdom, hoping to someday rebuild it to its former glory. *********************************************************************** Name: Yang Fang Leiden Age: 35 Height: 182 cm Weight: 76 kg Ambidexterious Birthplace: Fabul Special Commands: Endure: The physical damage dealt to Yang is reduced. The equivilent of a "Protetsu" spell. Gather: Yang accumulates his strength in order to perform a double- damage attack. Kick: Yang deals minimal damage to all enemies. Story (contains spoilers): Yang is one of the karate masters of Fabul. When Cecil and his party first come across Yang it is at the summit on Mt. Hobs, were he is defending himself from an onslaught of enemies sent by Golbeza to execute him. After helping Yang fend off the monsters the party learns that he is the last experienced fighter in his kingdom's army and that in its current state Fabul stands little chance against Golbeza's minions. Cecil's party travels with Yang to Fabul and the king there allows them to play a role in defending the crystal of fire. However, this attempt is unsuccessful, and Golbeza takes the crystal and kidnaps Rosa in the process. Defeated but sill resolute, Fabul's king makes arrangements for Yang to travel with Cecil's group to Baron to speak with Cid on the issue of the war. However, the boatride to Fabul ends in disaster, and the plan is unable to be carried out. Yang plunges into the sea in a effort to help Rydia and turns up in Baron, in a state of amnesia. Baronian soldiers use Yang's amnesia as an advantage and recruit the karate master to their side. When Cecil reaches Baron via the Devil's Road gateway in Mysidia they find Yang and a pair of guards in the town cafe. After a brief fight Yang comes to his senses and provides Cecil's party with the key necessary to accessing the underground waterways beneath Baron. Yang remains with the party until the assault on the Tower of Babel, when he sacrifices himself to stop the Gigantic Gun from eliminating the Dwarves engaged in battle outside. Yang survives, however, and awakens to find himself under the care of the Sylphs, magical creatures that later make themselves available to Rydia's beck and call. He recovers in time to help the rest of the world confront the Giant of Babel near the end of the game. Once Zeromus is defeated and Cecil and his companions have returned safely to earth, Yang is made king of Fabul. *********************************************************************** Name: Cid Pollendina Age: 54 Height: 159 cm Weight: 67 kg Right-handed Birthplace: Baron Special Commands: Peep: Cid analyzes his opponent's strengths and weaknesses. Story (contains spoilers): Cid is long-time friends with both Cecil and Rosa as well as the master engineer behind Baron's ariships, and as such an integral figure in the kingdom's military. Over time Cid takes notice of King Baron's unusual behavior, but is imprisoned when he confronts his Majesty on this issue. After Cecil's party defeats Cagnazzo they meet up with an escaped Cid, who reveals a hidden passage in the Castle of Baron which leads to his latest airship model, the Enterprise. When the group reaches the underground world, Cid leaves the party to wrap the Enterprise in mystic silver; without it, the airship is rendered incapable of flying over the lava. He returns just in time to save the party from plummeting to their doom, only to find that Golbeza's Red Wings are in pursuit of their airship. To impede the Red Wings' progress Cid leaps out of the Enterprise as it is approaching the gateway leading to the outer world and sets off an explosion, thus causing a landslide that effectibely blocks the passage. Cid is badly injured because of this stunt and when Cecil's party returns to the underground they find Cid being nursed back to health in the Dwarves Castle. Even in this state, Cid continues to assist the party by wrapping the Red Wings' stolen airship, the Falcon, in mystic silver and again later by attaching a large drill to the front of the machine. Cid makes himself useful again late in the game by helping Cecil's party enter the Giant of Babel's interior my dropping them into its mouth. *********************************************************************** Name: Edward Geraldine (Edge) Age: 26 Height: 175 cm Weight: 51 kg Ambidexterious Birthplace: Eblana Special Commands: Dart: Edge can throw unused swords, spears, and projectiles at an opponent for massive damage. Ninja: A type of magic unique to Edge. Mostly variations of different black and white spells. Sneak: Edge can steal different items from an array of enemies. Story (contains spoilers): Edge is the ninja prince of Eblana. When Rubicante (the most powerful of the Four Emperors) launches an invasion on Edge's kingdom he kidnaps his parents, the king and queen of Eblana. Edge, being the hotheaded indivisual that he is, chases after Rubicante alone and is badly defeated. Cecil and his party chase after Edge, but when they've caught up with him Edge has already lost the battle. Edge plans on running after Rubicante again when, upon viewing Rydia's reaction to the party's recent turn of events, decides to stay with Cecil's group instead. Together they invade the Tower of Babel in an effort to take back the crystals stolen by Golbeza's army, but while ascending the tower Edge finds that his parents have been transformed into monsters. Afraid that they are beginning to lose their human mind, Edge's parents destroy themselves just as Rubicante appears in a visible state of rage. Rubicante expresses his apologies to Edge, explaining that his assistant Dr. Lugeie had mutated his parents' bodies without his consent, but Edge refuses to listen to the demon's words and the party attacks him. Once Rubicante is beaten, Edge is told about Golbeza and remains with Cecil's group for the rest of the game to help them defeat this menace. Edge appears to have quite a crush on Rydia, and flirts with her constantly. However, this relationship is never fully developed; Rydia returns to the Land of the Phantom Beasts at the end of the game, and Edge, now king of Eblana, retains his love for her. *********************************************************************** Name: Tella Age: 60 Height: 177 cm Weight: 48 kg Right-handed Birthplace: Mysidia Special Commands: Remember: Tella attempts to recall a spell. This command will disappear after Cecil's transformation on Mt. Ordeals. Story (contains spoilers): Tella was once one of the most renowned sages in all of Mysidia. In his older years he began to lose his memory, and with that lost a great deal of his magical powress. When Cecil reaches the town of Kaipo the villagers tell him of how Tella's daughter ran away with Gilbert, the prince of Damcyan, after the sage refused to consent to their marriage. Cecil and Rydia later run into Tella while in the Underground Channel, and they accompany each other out of the caves. Just as they arrive outside of Damcyan, the kingdom is bombarded by the Red Wings and Golbeza storms the castle and retreats with the Crystal of Wind. When Tella enters the castle he finds his lost daughter Anna among the dying bodies, and attacks Gilbert in a blind rage. He is stopped by Anna, who explains that she died shielding Gilbert from arrows fired by Golbeza's troops. Tella comforts her daughter as she is dying then strands the party behind and leaves for Mt. Ordeals to unleash Meteo: the ultimate black magic. Halfway up the mountain he meets up with Cecil yet again, who is climbing Mt. Ordeals to become a Paladin. When the Light appears to test Cecil Tella's mind starts to race, and he manages to recover all of the spells he had forgotten as well as discover how to use Meteo. At the top of the Tower of Zot, after Golbeza has taken the Crystal of Earth, Tella attacks him. He uses his most powerful magic against him, but is unable to cause any real damage. He uses Meteo as a last resort, and while Golbeza's body is devastated by the magic, the shock caused by the spell destroys Tella altogether. Tella dies, regretful that he was blinded by such deep hatred. *********************************************************************** Name: Rydia of Mist Age: 7 Height: 107 cm Weight: 18 kg Right-handed Birthplace: Mist Special Commands: Summon: An extremely potent form of magic exclusive to Rydia. Calls upon the aid of phantom beasts from a distant land to do her bidding. Story (contains spoilers): Rydia was born in the village of the Misty Valley, home to the Summoners. The Summoners are a rare group of humans imbued with a very special gift: they can conjure phatom beasts from a distant land and have them do their bidding. However, the Summoner and beast share a strange bond; if the monster is ever killed in battle, then the Summoner will perish as well. Cagnazzo, under the guise of the King of Baron, orders Cecil and Cain to deliver a strange ring to the isolated village. On the way they kill a dragon that forms from the mist and hinders their progress. When Cecil and Cain arrive in the valley the powers of the ring cause the village to become bathed in flames; apparently Baron felt the Summoners were too dangerous to be left alive. Cecil hears the cries of a small girl and approaches them, to find Rydia and her dead mother. Rydia's mother was the one who summoned the Mist Dragon, so when the dragon fell in battle, the woman died also. Outraged to learn that Cecil and Cain were the ones who murdered her mother, Rydia summons a phantom beast called Titan which causes most of the valley to collapse in on itself. Cecil awakens to find Cain missing and Rydia beside him, unconscious. Cecil takes the silent girl to an inn at the desert town of Kaipo where he encourages her to rest. That night an officer from Baron shows up at the end and demands the Cecil hand over the girl; Cecil's refuses, and proceeds to dispatch the officer and his guards. Rydia begins to trust Cecil at this point, a trust that is strengthened when he and Rosa help the girl to overcome her fear of fire. While traveling by sea to Fabul, the boat is submerged underwater and Rydia is swallowed by Leviathan, a large sea serpent and (as revealed later) the ruler of the phantom beasts. Leviathan deposits Rydia in the Land of Phantom Beasts, where she perfects her study of the arts of magic. She shows up again in the underground world, just in time to save Cecil from Golbeza and his Dark Dragon. Notably, Rydia now appears to be a grown woman; when Cecil asks about this, Rydia explains that time flows differently in the Land of the Phantom Beasts (It is never explained, however, if she actually has matued both physically and mentally or if she is still something of a child in an adult's body). Either way, Rydia is much more open-minded at this point than she was as a child. After defeating Zeromus, Rydia returns to live with King Leviathan and Queen Asura in the Land of the Phantom Beasts, perhaps able to relate more closely to the monsters with which she shares a psychic link than with humans since she had matured physically. *********************************************************************** Name: Palom/Porom of Mysidia Age: 5 Height: 94/93 cm Weight: 22/19 kg Left-/Right-handed Birthplace: Mysidia Special Commands (Palom): Boast: Palom's attack power is increased. Special Commands (Porom): False Tears: Porom pretends to cry, prompting the enemies to run away. Special Commands (both): Twin: Palom and Porom weave their spells together to unleash a potent magic attack. Story (contains spoilers): When the boat from Fabul is shipwrecked and Cecil winds up alone in Mysidia, the people there meet him with great discontent--the villagers are enraged at him for the raid the Red Wings made on the village at the start of the game. The elder that resides in Mysidia encourages him to travel to Mt. Ordeals to attempt to become a Paladin. Fearing that the Black Knight may have an ulterior agenda, he sends spies to accompany Cecil on his journey to the mountain. Those spies are the young yet renowned twin mages, Palom and Porom. Palom, the black mage, is for the most part a very mouthy and arrogant character. Unlike his sister, he seems to have very little faith in Cecil the first time they meet (although he does grow to trust him later). Porom, the white mage, is much more polite and considerate, and frequently scolds her brother's rash behavior (to the point where she becomes just as obnoxious). As one might imagine, these two are usually at each other's throats, but at the same time they have a very intimate and unspoken understanding of one another. When Cecil returns from Mt. Ordeals, Palom and Porom beg the elder to allow them to stay with the Paladin. The elder agrees to this, and the twins remain in Cecil's party until a sad parting at Baron. Cagnazzo's magic causes the walls of the castle to move together, and to prevent the party from being crushed Palom and Porom turn themselves into stone. They are revived by the elder's magic later in the game. *********************************************************************** Name: Foo-soo-ya Special Commands: Spirit Wave: Foo-soo-ya becomes disabled for the remainder of the bout; the HP's of his party members count upward. Story (contains spoilers): Foo-soo-ya is the guardian of the Lunarians' slumber. When the Lunarians arrived on earth from their homeworld to find the humans still evolving, the Lunarians built a second moon where most of them entered a deep sleep. One of the ones who refused to enter this state, Zemus, longed to live on the earth and so was forced to sleep by Foo-soo-ya. When Foo-soo-ya discovered that Zemus's mind is still active and causing a range of disasters to befall earth, he reveals the location of his brother's magical ship and calls out to the half- Lunar, Cecil. Cecil uses the ship to travel to the Lunarian moon, where Foo-soo-ya reveals his heritage and offers his assistance to the people of earth. When the group arrives back on earth they find that the Giant of Babel, Zemus's tool of destruction, has already appeared. Cecil's party enters the interior of the Giant through its mouth and destroy its Control System. Golbeza shows up at this point, but Foo-soo-ya intervenes and removes Zemus's control over him. The connection between Cecil and Golbeza is revealed, and Foo-soo-ya and Golbeza travel back to the moon using the Tower of Babel gate to face Zemus alone. Cecil's party follows after them, and with their combined efforts manage to force the emergence of Zeromus. With Zeromus defeated, Foo-soo-ya states that he will return to watch over the slumber of the Lunarians. Golbeza goes with him, realizing that he cannot return to earth considering the atrocities he has committed. *********************************************************************** II-A Walkthrough *********************************************************************** 1: Misty Cave to the Desert of Kaipo Once you've left the castle of Baron your destination is the Misty Cave, located in the Nortwest. Before entering the cave you may want to build up your levels and earning healing items in the outside world. Upon entering the cave you will find that it is encased in a deep fog. NOTE: If playing on a emulator you need set your resolution to 320 X 240 X 16 in order to see anything (you should stay at this resolution throughout the course of the game if you want to see other screen effects later on). At the end of the cave the mist will ask you to turn back. If you're prepared, say "no". You will then battle the first boss, the Mist Dragon. Strategy for beating the Mist Dragon: This guy's a piece of cake. Have Cecil attack and Cain jump constantly until the dragon transforms into mist. Do not attack the creature at this point or it will retaliate with Cold Breath, a powerful ice attack. Wait until the dragon reappears and attack it with full force. Victory will be yours in no time. Un-equip Cain before entering the Town of Mist, since he'll be leaving your party shortly. After the scene at the village, you will need to find the oasis village of Kaipo at the center of the desert. When resting at the inn for the night you will be awakened by guards from Baron. They have come for the girl. Strategy for beating the soldiers: Don't attack the green soldier. The others should fall with a single blow. Once they have been defeated, the officer will make a hasty retreat. Make sure you sell off Cain's equipment and visit Rosa in the far- right building the next day. Also make sure Rydia is in the back row so she will take less damage during battle. You might want to build up Rydia's levels before entering the Underground Channel. *********************************************************************** 2: The Underground Channel to Reviving Rosa To the Northeast of Kaipo you will find the Underground Channel. Not far inside you will be joined by the sage, Tella. His thunder spell will prove invaluable while facing the water-based creatures you will frequently encounter. Make sure to grab all of the treasures in the cave, paticularly the set of Hades armor and sword for Cecil. Use a tent and save when you reach the opening inside the mountain range. Not long after entering the second part of the cave you will face Octomammoth. Strategy for beating Octomammoth: He will slow down as you hack away at his eight tentacles. Have Tella use thunder, Rydia summon her Chocobo, and Cecil attack. Heal when necessary. Once Octomamm is left with only one limb it will take about 400 more points of damage to finish him off. At the bombarded Damcyan Tella will attack the prince then leave your party to seek revenge on Golbeza. Gilbert (probably the most useless character in the game) will join you, bringing along with him a hoverboat. Before leaving Damcyan walk outside the right wall of the castle to find a hidden treasury full of useful items (there are also pots on the top floor that will restore your HP and MP to full). Travel east of Damcyan and search for the Antlion's cave. Pick up the treasures scattered about this area, including a Lamia Harp for Gilbert. Make sure to use the Save Point inside the cave before going up against the Antlion. Strategy for beating Antlion: Whenever physical attacks are used against the Antlion he will use a damaging counter attack. Instead, stick to using Rydia's Chocobo spell while having Cecil and Gilbert parry. If Rydia's MP runs low, use an Ether. When Antlion is defeated you will obtain the Light of the Desert. Return to Kaipo village using the hoverboat and heal Rosa. That night Gilbert will fight a Sahagin outside (he should give you no trouble). Equip Rosa with the Cross Bow you found in Damcyan's treasury and travel to Mt. Hobs. *********************************************************************** 3: Mt. Hobs to the Invasion of Fabul After Rydia melts the path of ice proceed as normal. At the summit you will help Yang, a karate master of Fabul, fight against the Mother Bomb. Strategy for beating the Mother Bomb: Attack the Mombomb using normal attacks. Eventually it will explode, forming three Bombs and three Pain Bombs. Rosa should heal the party constantly, while Rydia summons her Chocobo, Yang uses his kick command, and Cecil attacks. Quickly use a Phoenix Down if a character falls in battle. Try to take out the Pain Bombs first, since they are more likely to explode. When all this is done, Yang will travel with your party to Fabul. The path to Fabul is rather straightforward. Once there, buy a set of Demon equipment for Cecil, but do not buy anything for your other party members since they won't be with you much longer. You may need to replenish your item stock as well. When you are ready speak to the king and agree to help defend the crystal from Golbeza. Most of these fights are fairly easy. In the Crystal Room you will run into Cain and he'll challenge Cecil to a duel. You cannot win this battle. After Cecil falls to Cain Golbeza shows up, mocks you, takes the crystal and Rosa, and leaves. The king will give you the Deathbringer out of appreciation for your efforts, and at the inn you will make preparations to sail to Baron. *********************************************************************** 4: Village of Mysidia to the Summit of Mt. Ordeals After the shipwreck you will be next to Mysidia, the village Cecil raided earlier. As of now, Cecil will be unable to use the equipment found in the shops. The elder will explain to you that you cannot defeat Golbeza with the sword of darkness and suggests that Cecil travel to Mt. Ordeals to become a Paladin. Palom and Porom, twin Mysidian wizards, will join you at this point. It is a long walk to Mt. Ordeals. When you arrive outside the mountain range enter the Chocobo forest nearby and restore the twins' MP with a white chocobo after Porom has healed the party. While on Mt. Ordeals keep in mind that Cecil's sword has little effect on the undead monsters, so the wizards will be doing most of the work. Tella will join you as you ascend the mountain. Be sure to take advantage of the Save Point, as you will soon come face-to-face with a powerful enemy. Strategy for beating Scarmiglione: This is probably the most difficult fight so far, and to make things worse Scarmiglione will attack you on two seperate occasions. In the first fight have Palom use Faira to quickly dispatch Scarmiglione's minions, then attack the sorcerer with full force (keep in mind that Scarmiglione will counterattack with a Thunder spell). In the second fight you will be attacked from behind. Use the "row" command as soon as possible and attack Scarmiglione with a barrage of fire spells, while Porom heals the party as necessary (otherwise, she should be using her Keal magic against the undead enemy). After the fight, you will reach the cave of mirrors and Cecil will have to withstand the attacks of his former self to prove himself worthy to don the Light. Do not attack the image of the Black Knight or the battle will drag on forever. Once this is over, you are ready to travel back to Mysidia and then to Baron via the Devil Road. Make sure you have equipped Cecil with the armor in the shops before you make the journey. Rare Items: There are two extremely effective and hard-to-find items you can obtain by fighting random encounters on Mt. Ordeals: the Lilith Rod (from the Liliths) and the Giant's Gauntlet (probably the best gauntlet in the game, from the skeleton creatures). If you have a lot of extra time on your hands, go for it. At the very worst you will have earned a lot of experience. *********************************************************************** 5: Baron Revisited to the Kingdom of Troia At the inn in the town of Baron you will come across Yang, who is being controlled by Baron soldiers. Using Tella's newly-accquired magic, you should be able to wear them down in no time. Yang will re-join your party, and you will now have access to the parts of the town that were previously sealed off. First of all go to the weapon/armor shop and equip Yang in the best gear possible, including a set of Lightning Claws. Now head into the Watery Pass and fight your way into the castle of Baron. Most of the creatures in this area are susceptible to thunder spells. Hang on to the Anicent Sword you find near the Save Point; you'll want to sell it off later. Inside the castle you will come across an old "friend", Beigan, who has joined Golbeza. Strategy for beating Beigan: Have Tella use Thundaga on his body. At this point Beigan will use Reflek and other magic will be deflected-- unless, of course, a member of your own party also has Reflek on them, allowing you to deflect spells from that person back at Beigan. Otherwise, ignore the vampiric limbs, use strong physical attacks, and heal frequently. Stratety for beating Cagnazzo: Now it's time to face the Emperor who was impersonating the King of Baron, Cagnazzo. Actually, this guy's a pushover; use your strongest thunder spells against him and his water barrier will be destroyed in no time. Do the same when he hides in his shell to recover lost HPs, and you should be able to take him down with little effort. After your sad parting with the twins the engineer Cid will join your party, bringing along with him the airship Enterprise. Your destination is Tororia, but there are a few other things you may want to check out first, namely the treasures in the ruins of Eblana Castle and the Mithril equipment sold in a mysterious island village. In Troia you will learn about the Dark Elf. Visit Gilbert and obtain the Twinharp. For now ignore the treasury in the castle basement; it will become accessible later. *********************************************************************** 6: The Cave of Power to the Tower of Zot To get to the Cave of Power you will need a Black Chocobo. You will find one in the forest north of Tororia. As soon as you enter the cave the party will be struck down by a magnetic field. Any character bearing metal equipment will be weighed down and unable to participate in battles inside the cave. Yang's claws will still work, so equip Cid and Cecil with a bow and arrows. Deep within the cave you will find the insidious Dark Elf and the Crystal of Earth. He easily defeats your party, but you are saved by the intervention of Gilbert. You can now equip metal weapons, which you will desperately need when the fight starts for real. Strategy for beating the Dark Elf: This boss has two forms. Against his first form magic is all but useless, so stick to physical attacks, and quickly heal a character who is effected by the Dark Elf's Tornado and Whisper spells. The Dark Elf's second form, a coiled dragon, is far stronger than the first. To quickly end this battle, have Tellah use Tornado. One blow will finish off the dragon at this point. Return to the clerics in Troia and Cain's voice will demand that you turn over the crystal. Before leaving the castle make sure you have obtained the items from the treasury. Enter your airship and you will be whisked away to Golbeza's Tower of Zot. The monsters in the tower are the hardest you have faced yet, but do not let this discourage you from grabbing every treasure in sight. Outside the doorway leading into Golbeza's chambers you will be ambushed by the Magus sisters. Strategy for beating the Magus sisters: Your first job is to kill off the sister in the middle; she cannot be revived, and when she dies the others cannot perform the Delta Attack successfully. To do this cast Reflek on Tella and have him deflect high-level elemental magic at her. You may also want to consider casting Berserk on Cecil, as his attack power will rise significantly. Do not neglect party members that have been damaged by the Delta Attack, especially the Bio spell. When the sister in the middle is dead, the others become much less of a threat and will fall in battle very easily. When you meet Golbeza Tella sacrifices himself by casting Meteo. Golbeza will retreat, weakened by the spell, leaving Rosa and Cain behind. Equip Rosa properly and prepare to face Barbariccia, another one of the Four Emperors. Stratefy for beating Barbariccia: Barbariccia is nearly invulnerable in her funnel state. To counter this effect. Kain must use his jump attack. Rosa will be very busy this battle, healing the effects of Barbariccia's petrification magic while restoring the characters' HPs. You may want Cecil to assist Rosa in the healing process. Yang and Cid should attack when Barbariccia is not in her funnel state. Be very cautious when fighting Barbariccia, for she can gain an advantage over you in battle surprisingly fast. After Barbariccia is defeated Rosa will teleport the party to Cecil's room in Baron. It is now time to open the gate to the Underground world and seek out the dark crystals. *********************************************************************** 7: Agalt Village to the Tower of Babel Agalt is on an island dead south of Baron. Talk to the villagers there and learn about the dwarf kingdom that lies beneath the earth. Drop the Magma Fragment into the well at the center of the town and descend into the underground world in your airship. A series of events will take place and you'll end up outside of the Dwarves' Castle. You may want to build up your levels before confronting King Jiott, since the next two major battles occur in succession and both can be difficult. Strategy for beating the Calcobrena: It is possible to defeat the dolls before they combine to form the Calcobrena, but this is unlikely. Cast Berserk on Cecil and Yang and have Kain jump. Rosa should heal the party whenever she has the chance. Try to defeat the Calcobrena as fast as possible, or eventually it will reform as six dolls and the fight essentially starts over again, only your supplies are drained. Cecil must be alive at the end of this battle or you cannot win the next one. Strategy for beating Golbeza: Have Kain jump before Golbeza uses the Cursed Aura technique. When Rydia shows up have her cast Ifrit while Cecil attacks and Kain jumps a second time. Be sure to have Cecil heal Rydia if she is the target of a deadly spell such as Bio. Now King Jiott will permit you to explore the rest of the castle; use this oppertunity to prepare yourself for the Tower of Babel. Don't bother with the equipment in the shops since you'll come across even more powerful weapons and armor in the tower. Make sure to grab all the treasures scattered throughout the castle before leaving. The path to the tower is long but fairly straightforward. Rare Items: If you defeat the Black Lizards there is a 1 in 255 chance you'll win a Medusa Sword, one of the strangest items in the game. The description in the status bar reads *TOP SECRET WEAPON-** and when used in a battle a text caption appears that reads "Turning to Stone??". The sword is very powerful at this point in the game, although it is not as strong as the Excalibur or the Ragnarok, both of which you shall obtain later. Most of the treasures you find here are invaluable. Equip the new set of armor scattered in guarded chest throughout the tower. To obtain the Key to the Tower you must face Rubicante's essentric assistant, Lugeie. Strategy for beating Dr. Lugeie: You shouldn't have any trouble with Balnaba, Lugeie's robotic creation. The real danger is when you take on a transformed Lugeie. Lugeie has two very threatening attacks: A laser, which can cause over 1000 points of damage, and a gas attack which can put your characters to sleep. Have Rosa resurrect fallen allies and heal the party frequently, while Rydia uses her magic and the others attack with full force. Yang's attacks seem to be paticularly effective here. After Yang sacrifices himself to stop the Gigantic Gun, you can leave the tower. You'll run into Golbeza again at the bridge, but Cid will save you from a nasty situation and you'll end back up in the overworld. *********************************************************************** 8: Eblana to the Land of Phantom Beasts Talk to the mechanics in Baron and they will add an attachment to the Enterprise, making it possible to transport the Hoverboat to different locations on the world map. Take it outside of the Eblana ruins and use it to enter the cave nearby. After a short walk you'll find that the people of Eblana are hiding here, and that Edge went off to face Rubicante alone. Stock up on supplies and continue to explore the caves. After a skirmish in which Rubicante crushes Edge, the ninja prince will join your party. Continue and you'll end up back in the Tower of Babel. You will run into Edge's parents, only to find out that they have been turned into monsters by Lugeie. After a short fight the monsters kill themselves and Rubicante shows up again. Strategy for beating Rubicante: You need to be careful in timing your magical attacks. Suiton and Blizara both work very well, but if Rubicante is shielding himself with his cloak of flame when the spell is cast, the damage will be converted to energy. Cecil's Ice Brand sword can cause great damage to Rubicante also. Make sure Rosa keeps the party's HPs high, and quickly assists any character targeted by Rubicante's Flame Dragon spell. Interestingly, using call spells occassionally causes Rubicante to cast Ice on himself. In the Crystal Room and pitfall will send you back to the Underground section of the tower. After stealing the Red Wings' airship, head back to the Dwarves' Castle and have Cid wrap the ship in Mithril so it can fly over the Lava. King Jiott will give you the Luka Key to enter the Sealed Cave, but you are free to explore the rest of the Underground world as well. First head to a cave located on a small island. This is the Land of Phatom Beasts. You will need Rosa's Levitate spell to prevent the damage inflicted by the tiles on the floor. Eventually you will arrive at a village inhabited by monsters. There's a couple of things to do here: Check out the equipment being sold in the weapon/armor shops, obtain the Rat Tail, and confront the queen and king of monsters, Asura and Leviathan. Strategy for beating Asura: Rosa must know Reflek for you to stand a chance against Asura. Cast Reflek on Asura and all of her healing magic will be reflected onto your party. This tends to be a long fight, but it's not nearly as daunting as it may seem at first. Strategy for beating Leviathan: There is no sure-fire way to beat Leviathan; you simply have to outlast him. Rosa's white magic of essential to winning this fight. If you have any useless weapons on hand, have Edge toss them. Leviathan is suspectible to thunder-based attacks, so keep this in mind as well. Win these fights and Rydia will have both monsters at her disposal. On the first floor of the town there is a hidden teleporter that leads to the room with the four treasure chests you may have noticed before. Grab these and take the corresponding teleporter out of the cave. *********************************************************************** 9: Sylvan Cave to the Tower of Wishes After defeating Asura and Leviathan head to the cave on the Northwest corner of the map. This is the Sylvan Cave, home to a number of exotic beasts and anicent treasures. As with the Land of Phantom Beasts, the Levitate spell will prevent your party from being damaged by the glowing tiles. Deep within the cave you will find an unconscious Yang, who is being protected by the Sylphs. After gathering all of the treasures in the cave head for the small dwarven village and purschase the stock up on equipment, especially the effective Diamond Armor. Now you are ready to enter the Sealed Cave nearby. The doors in the Sealed Cave are actually by Assault Doors, powerful monsters that can transform into beasts such as the Manticore and the Yellow Dragon. Although fighting the doors becomes tedious, you will obtain great experience for standing up against them. Be sure to open every door in the cave, since you can find Save Points as well as a number of refutable items behind them, including the powerful Light Sword. After grabbing the Dark Crystal at the end of cave, you will face the Demon's Wall. Strategy for beating the Demon's Wall: Rosa's Fast and Slow spells are very effective in this battle. Have Rydia use Bio repeatidly, Cecil attack, Cain jump, and don't forget to make use of Edge's Throw ability. If you do not defeat the Demon's Wall within a certain duration of time he will begin to use his Crash technique, killing off your party members instantly. Speed is of the utmost essence during this battle. Un-equip Cain before exiting the cave, at which point Golbeza will re- assume control over him. Having lost the Dark Crystal, return to the Dwarves' Castle and speak with the king. He will recommend you return to Mysidia. To do this speak with Cid again; this time he'll attack a drill to the Falcon, allowing you to return to the overworld. Before heading to the Tower of Wishes in Mysidia go to the right tower of Baron and meet with the spirit of King Baron. He will test you in the form of Odin. Strategy for beating Odin: Have Rydia use Thundaga to take away most of his HPs. The rest of the party should attack him with their strongest moves. If Odin does not fall in around three turns he will use his sword slash, effectively killing everyone in your party, so be very quick. Win and Odin will be at Rydia's beck and call. If you speak to Yang's Wife in Fabul she'll give you the Frying Pan and instruct you to send it to Yang. Return to the Sylvan Cave with the Frying Pan and Yang will give you the Kitchen Knife, dagger which when thrown will cause 9999 damage. The Sylphs will entrust Rydia with their power as well. Now return to Mysidia and speak with the elder. The Magical Ship will arise from the sea and you will be able to venture to the Moon. But first, you need to get the Excalibur. Obtaining the Excalibur: Use the Enterprise to transport the Hovercraft to Silveria. From there go to the cave nearby and exchange the Rat Tail you found in the Land of Summoned Monsters for the Adamantite. Take this to the blacksmith in the Underground world and he'll upgrade the Legendary Sword into Excalibur, the second strongest sword in the game. You will now be able to buy items such as Shurikens from the blacksmith as well; use this to your advantage. *********************************************************************** 10: The Crystal Palace to the Giant of Babel When you reach the Moon you should land on the top of a cave to the upper left of the palace. Travel through the intertwining passages but ignore the treasures for now. At the palace you will meet Foo-soo-ya and he will tell you about the history of the Lunar civilization and offer some insight into Cecil's past. He will join your party, bringing with him almost every black and white magic spell in the game. Before returning to earth to stop the Giant of Babel, open the chests from before (Foo-soo-ya is a great help in dispatching the monsters guarding their contents) and explore Bahamut's Cave (easily identifiable from your spaceship as a cave surrounded by a ring of moon rock). You will have to face three Behemoths before reaching finally Bahamut's inner sanctum, where he will test you. Strategy for beating Bahamut: Have Rosa and Foo-soo-ya cast wall on your party members. When the counter reaches zero, Bahamut will cast MegaFlare and any character that remains unprotected by Wall will likely die. As long as you use the Wall spell you should be able to turn Bahamut's power against him and beat him without too much trouble. When defeated Bahamut will entrust Rydia with the strongest call spell in the game. Now return to earth and watch as the Giant of Babel is unleashed. Eventually all of your old friends will show up to battle against it, and Cid will help your party reach the interior of the robot itself. Fight your way through the giant. This is a great place to build experience, by the way. Not far after the Save Point you'll run into some of your other old friends, the Four Emperors. Strategy for beating the Emperors: That's right, the Four Emperors have returned for one last battle that will keep you at the edge of your seat. Have Foo-soo-ya dish out his strongest spells (Faiga against Scarmiglione, Blizaga against Rubicante, and Thundaga against Cagnazzo and Barabariccia). Rosa will have to constantly heal the party if you suspect to endure this battle. Have Cecil attack with his Excalibur, Rydia with her call magic, and Edge with his ninja swords (or any shurikens you may have purschased from the blacksmith earlier). As long as you are not at a low level you should be able to send these guys packing a second time. Strategy for beating the Control System: Now you need to destroy the Ccontrol System that operates the Giant of Babel. You could cast Meteo and Bahamut back-to-back, or concentrate solely on taking out the defense orb. Once the defense orb is down, attack the Control System and finally go after the Attack System. Do NOT leave the Control System on its own or it will use a deadly technique that causes 9999 damage on one of your party members and that it will use several times before simply reviving the orbs. With the orbs defeated, Golbeza will show up. Foo-soo-ya will remove the spell on Golbeza and reveal the connection between him and Cecil. Then Foo-soo-ya and Golbeza set out to defeat Zemus, while Cain joins your party once again. Now you are approaching the final battle. *********************************************************************** 11: The Lunar Subterranean and the Final Battle Return to the lunar lair and the crystals of the moon will open the path to the subterranean world. There is a LOT of stuff to do in this area. All the best equipment can be found here, and a good deal of it only after hours of random battles (the Adamantite Armor quickly comes to mind). Several of the treasures are guarded by servents of Zemus; those treasures are listed below: Murasame: This treasure is guarded by the White Dragon. If you use Levitate on your characters at the start of the battle, the dragons Quake spell will prove harmless. He should be easy at this point. Holy Spear: This treasure is guarded by Plague, who will trigger a death counter on all your characters as soon as the battle starts. If you hold down the "A" button throughout the entire fight your characters will not die when their counter reaches zero. Cheap, but effective. If you don't approve of such methods, then simply take him out as quick as you can using the most powerful techniques available to each of your party members. Ribbon (x2): A pair of Lunarsauruses protect the Ribbons. Try to kill the two beasts at around the same time or the one left alive will constantly retaliate with a very strong fire-based spell. Masamune: This treasure is guarded by Tridarithan. Use Thundaga and the most powerful attacks at your disposal, and make sure to heal your characters whenever you have the chance. There is no easy way around this boss; you will just have to outlast him. Ragnarok: This treasure is guarded by Dark Bahamut, the strongest of Zemus' servents. As soon as the fight starts he will use MegaFlare, following up with spells such as Reflek, Flare, and Heal when his HPs are low. Revive any fallen characters as soon as possible and attack Dark Bahamut with everything you've got. Try to defeat him before he uses MegaFlare a second time, otherwise your resources may be too drained to finish him off. Your efforts will pay off; the Ragnarok is the strongest sword in the game. You may want to consider building up your levels before facing the final enemy. The best place to do this is at the path to Zemus. The monsters here can be intimidating but offer tremendous amounts of gold and experience points. This is also a great oppertunity to obtain some of the rarer items in the game, such as the Glass Helmet and Crystal Ring. The Final Boss: Cecil alone must use the Crystal that Golbeza gives him to reveal Zeromus' true colors. Start out by having Edge throw the Kitchen Knife and Excalibur at him; both of these should inflict maximum damage. Rosa should concentrate on healing the party, Kain should Jump, and Cecil should fight. Magic spells such as Bahamut can cause great damage to Zeromus, but you must take into consideration the consequences (Zeromus will usually counterattack with spells such as Tornado and Bio). Don't even bother with spells like Haste and Blink, since Zeromus' Black Hole spell will nullify such effects. When Zeromus gets weak (around 8000 HP) he will stop casting Big Blast and start resorting to Meteo. Usually Meteo doesn't cause much of a threat, but on rare occassions it will hit your entire party for tremendous damage (around 2500 HP). Keep in mind that Zeromus has well over 100,000 Hit Points, as you don't want to exhaust your resources too early in the battle. When you've defeated Zeromus, sit back and watch the ending, one of the most memorable moments in video gaming history. You've earned it! *********************************************************************** III-Shops *********************************************************************** Kaipo Village: This is a great resource for the player who simply has to have everything. *********************************************************************** Ultra-Rare Items - MEDUSA SWORD - This one's strange. The description for this weapon, as given in the status bar, reads "**-TOP SECRET WEAPON*", and when used in battle a message appears in the dialog text that reads: "Turned to stone...??". Its attack power is 77, but getting it is extremely difficult and time- consuming; you can steal it from Medusas or you have a 1 in 250 chance of winning it from the Black Lizards in the Tower of Babel. - PINK TAIL - This is quite possibly the rarest item in any video game ever created. The tail is won from Pink Puffs that will attack you only in a small room with a treasure chest containing a Cottage in the Lunar Subterranean B5. It can take as long as an hour for these creatures to reveal themselves, and worst of all, there is only a 1 in 64 chance that you will win the item. Take it to the Tail Collector and he'll give you the Adamantite Armor, which makes it impossible for any enemy (including Zeromus, by the way) to inflict over three or four points of damage at a single time! - CRYSTAL RING - The Crystal Ring is actually better than the Crystal Gauntlet because it boosts its wearer's stats significantly. Win it from Behemoths. - KITCHEN KNIFE - Late in the game, while Yang is unconscious, visit his wife and get the Frying Pan. Speak to Yang and then return to his wife to get the Kitchen Knife. While it cannot be equipped, it will cause 9999 points of damage if used as a dart by Edge. - LILITH ROD - This weapon is won randomly from the snake creatures on Mt. Ordeals. NEVER use a Lilith Rod on a Lilith. - GLASS HELMET - This is the best helmet available in the game. It is won randomly from the Phase creatures that patrol the path to Zemus. - POWER ROBE - You win this from the Red Dragons. This armor does not seem to resist fire, ice, and lightning-based attacks like the US manual suggests, and is pretty much worthless. - GIANT'S GAUNTLET - This is the best arm protection in the game. You can earn it by defeating the Skeleton creatures in Cave Eblan and Mt. Ordeals. - DRAGON WHIP - Rydia's best whip. Randomly won from Blue Dragons. - SILENCE STAFF - The best staff available. Won from the Dark Wizards that appear in the Lunar Subterranean, as well as the Summoners that appear in the Land of Phantom Beasts. - RUNE AXE - A powerful and hard-to-find axe won from Demon Soldiers that appear on the moon. - FLYING DRAGON SPEAR - A neat spear the makes a cool sound when it strikes an enemy (it sounds like a lightning staff). Can be won from the Red Dragons. Good, but not as powerful as the Holy Spear (you can occassionally deliver a fatal blow with this weapon, although the effect is very rare). - ARTEMIS BOW - The best bow available, it was won from the Demon Soldiers on the moon. - CURSED RING - Won randomly from undead creatures. - ARTEMIS ARROWS - The strongest arrows. Steal these from the Moon Goddess. *********************************************************************** Programmer's Room There is a secret area hidden in the dwarves castle. Go between the hole in the wall between the desks at the weapon/armor shops and you will be inside a cafe. In the upper-right hand corner there is a hidden passage in that leads to the secret area. Here you can talk to your favorite programmers, fight with the game developers, and browse through a Porno Mag. *********************************************************************** A Real Challenge Did you know you can still become a Paladin by dealing 1000 points of damage to the Knight on Mt Ordeals. If you're up for the challenge... go for it! *********************************************************************** Duplicating Weapons/Items Enter a battle, making sure a character has the weapon/item you want duplicated equipped. When that character's turn comes up, go to your item list, select a blank space, and then select the item. Leave the item list and run away from the battle. From the menu screen, equip the desired item, remove it again, and you will now have two of those items in your inventory. My favorite trick here is to make several duplicates of the Anicent Sword (found in the caves beneath Baron Castle) and then sell them for 9500 Gil apiece. *********************************************************************** Equipping Stolen Items It is possible for any of your characters to equip any stolen item. For this to work you must not have any of the item you intend to steal in your inventory at the time. Enter battle and steal from an enemy that will give you either a weapon or shield. The next character who takes a turn will be able to equip that item from the item menu, regardless of who that character is. If you use the newly equipped weapon or shield during battle as an item, you can make some very strange things occur. Unfortunately there's not many good things you can steal, but you might considering picking up a shield for Rydia. *********************************************************************** Hidden Call Magic There are four hidden call spells: Goblin, Mind Flayer, Bomb, and Cockatrice. To get these you must fight the given type of monster until you win the spell as an item (it will be added to Rydia's spell list when used on her). You have about a 1 in 255 chance of winning the spell (keep in mind that none of these are very useful). Most of these are weak, but the Cockatrice spell is extremely effective. *********************************************************************** Skip the Sealed Cave After the battle with Golbeza in which Rydia re-joins the party, don't move. You should be standing in front of the king, who will tell you that you need to get the Dark Crystal back. Go to your menu and have Rydia cast a dejeon spell. You'll be back in the crystal room. Take the same crystal the Golbeza took before and the Dark Crystal will appear in your inventory. Once you reach the sealed cave, Cain will steal the crystal and you will have completed the cave without ever playing through it! I would NOT recommend this, however,as you'd be missing out on a lot of experience and potentially effective equipment. *********************************************************************** Obtaining 255 Of An Item Equip Cecil with a bow (in his left hand) and arrows. Enter a battle and on Cecil's turn put the arrows in a blank item slot and replace Cecil's bow with the Avenger. Have the rest of your characters wait while a berserked Cecil wins the ensuing battle. Now check out Cecil's equipment. If done correctly, you will see the Avenger in Cecil's left hand and a number in his right hand. Now unequip the sword and equip the weapon or shield you want to duplicate in the hand next to the number. The name of the weapon or shield will glitch. Now unequip it and you will have 255 of that weapon or shield in your inventory. *********************************************************************** Frog Song Have Gilbert sing while he is affected by the Frog status. He will sing "Frog's Song" which turns the enemy into frogs. *********************************************************************** Avoiding the Metallic Field To equip metallic weapons while in the Cave of Power, simply enter the area with no weapons equipped. Once the magnetic field has taken effect, go to the item screen and equip any metal weapon. The weapons will not weigh you down during battle. *********************************************************************** An Easier Way to Beat Plague To avoid dying when the death counter reaches zero, simply hold down the "A" button for the duration of the battle. When the counter reaches zero your characters will remain alive. *********************************************************************** IX. Word Origins *********************************************************************** Character Names --------------- In most versions of the Bible, a man named Cain betrays and kills his brother Abel after God fails to look at his offerings in favor. Cain is then condemned to wonder the earth aimlessly. Similarly, the Cain in FF IV becomes spiteful after fortune seems to shine over his friend Cecil (i.e. Rosa) and it is this spite that makes him easy for Golbeza to control. The name Cid appears in nearly every installment of the Final Fantasy series. This may be a historical reference to El Cid, who in Spanish legend fought to overpower the legendary kingdom of Valencia and eliminate the Moorish people which had seized it. It is my understanding that Rydia's name comes from the country of Lydia. I don't know much about Lydia's history, other than it was the first country to ever establish coins as a currency. *********************************************************************** Equipment --------- The Aegis Shield refers to Zeus's armor in Greek mythology, the Aegis. Its name means "protection". Artemis appears in Greek mythology as the twin sister of the sun god Apollo and goddess of the hunt. The strongest bows and arrows in the game are the Artemis Bow and Artemis Arrows. Everyone knows the legends of the Excalibur, the sword was said to have belonged to King Arthur. Some legends hold that he pulled the sword from a sword to secure his position as king, others say it was given to him by the Lady of the Lake. The Gungnir (Gunge Lance) was the spear used by the Norse god Odin. It was said to always seek and strike out the most powerful target. The Masamue sword finds its roots in Japanese legend, where a blacksmith named Masamune was said to have made a sword entrusted with great holy power that was capable of cutting through steel. Contrastingly, the Murasame sword was said to be cursed. Its name means "rain of blood". The Medusa Sword and Arrows are named after one of the three Gorgons in Greek mythology. Medusa's hair was replaced by Snakes and her gaze was capable of turning people into stone. Medusa is also a monster in FF IV The Ragnarok refers to the apocalypse in Norse mythology, a time when many of the presiding gods (such as Odin) are to be killed and a new world is to be born. Yoichi (as in Yoichi's Bow) was the hero of the "Tale of Genji". *********************************************************************** Enemies ------- Arachne comes from Greek mythology. She was transformed into a spider for challenging the overprided goddess Athena to a sowing contest. The Basilisk was a lizard whose gaze is said to be frightening enough to turn a person to stone. The Calcobrena appears in Dante's "Inferno". It is one of the ten presiding demons of hell. Cockatrices are the foul, winged serpents that appear in Biblical l egend. The term Eukaryote refers to a complex single-celled organism. The Four Emperors, Scarmiglione, Cagnazzo, Barbaricca, and Rubicante, all borrow their names from demons encountered in Dante's "Inferno". They are based off of the four elements that in anicent and later Elizabethian beliefs were the four primordial building blocks of life. Gargoyles were statues placed around gothic castles during early-to- middle medieval times. I remembering hearing somewhere that they were believed to protect the castle from malicious spirits and demons. Golems are emphasised in Jewish mysticism and mythology. They were usually made out of mud and clay. It was rumored that these Golems would come to life when a specific person inscribed the necessary word among its head, and would return to the earth when that word was scratched out. The Hydra was a beast in Greek mythology with nine snake heads, the one in the center of which was immortal. When any of the other heads were cut off, another would almost immediately grow in its place. The Mind Flayer appears in folklore. It was said to be a destructive spirit that would try to steal the souls of others, since it had no soul of its own. Nagas appear in Indian mythology (I *think*). They were described as people with unusually long tails. The term Prokaryote refers to a very simple single-celled organism. Satan Jr. and Satanite are two enemies that appear in the Land of Phantom Beasts. Satan's name is used in Numbers to denote "advesary"; in other Old Testament Books, his name is used to denote an office, and the angel that assumes Satan's name is not apostate or fallen as is the common belief. A misreading of Isaiah causes Satan to be confused with Lucifer. *********************************************************************** Phantom Beasts ------- ------ Asura (or "Ashur") is the god of war in Hindu mythology. Bahamut is regarded in legend as the greatest of dragons, one who respects strength and despises weakness. He plays the same role in the FF series. Indra was the manipulator of rain and thunder in Vedic mythology. The Ifrit are creatures of great power that appear in Arabic myths. They were usually brought forth by a higher power to somehow affect the course of civilization. The Leviathan is mentioned in the book of Job. It is usually thought to refer to a water serpent. In folklore, Leviathan would attack sea- fairing ships and eat their inhabitants. Odin is one of Boor's sons and chief of the Norse gods. Shiva is the Hindu goddess of destruction. The twelve Titans were the primordial beings of Greek mythology. They battled with the gods for control of the world and later appear in the epic "Odyssey". *********************************************************************** Locations --------- Troia is the Latin word for Troy, a legendary country and the subject of several Greek and Roman legends. The Tower of Babel was built by humans in Biblical legend to be so tall that it would extend to heaven and allow them passage to God. God then retaliated by changing the language spoken by the people who were building the tower so that it could never be finished. This resembles Golbeza's efforts to use the tower as a trigger for reaching the Lunarian moon in FF IV, a place of incomprehensible power and knowledge. *********************************************************************** That's all for now. Remember, there can be no light...without darkness. ***********************************************************************
