Honorable Mentions
(not ranked)

When dealing with over one hundred RPGs, making the top ten is nothing to be ashamed of, right? So here are the next five RPGs on the overall list. By all means, these are still fantastic games.

Finalists #6 - #10

  1. Diablo II is still the current high standard for dungeon crawling. Despite being the second game in the series, it is very often credited as being the most influential crawler to date. Diablo II may have hit back in 2000, but the game's impact is still felt today. Hell awaits, are you ready?

  2. In 2007, Commander Shepard set out to save the galaxy and win our hearts in Mass Effect. As the first part of a trilogy, Mass Effect did a great job of introducing RPGamers to a universe full of all kinds of wonders and horrors. Your decisions impact not only this game, but future titles as well, so decide if you want to be a beacon of virtue or a complete jerk, but either way you're going to have fun doing so.

  3. Final Fantasy XII brought Matsuno's world of Ivalice back to life with a unique departure from the standard turn-based combat system. A highly confrontational entry into the series, this MMORPG-like title does a great job of giving players full control over their party and gives reason to take advantage of all available spells and skills. Even though Matsuno left before development was finished, what he started ended up being an RPG loved by many.

  4. Valkyria Chronicles succeeded despite Sega's best efforts to ignore it. While initially passed over by many, this unique real-time tactical RPG quickly gained a cult following among RPGamers everywhere. Hopefully the same love and care have been put into this game's PSP sequel coming later in 2010.

  5. Who would have seriously thought that combining characters from Final Fantasy and Disney would have succeeded in anything outside of fan fiction? Well, Kingdom Hearts took all doubts away, as the combination of characters was a brilliant mix. Despite recent entries in the series focusing more on original characters, the perfect storm of the first Kingdom Hearts still stands out today as an enjoyable experience.

And that's it. There were a lot of RPGs to cover and everyone on staff had a different list of favorite, but these were the top picks overall. These are the RPGs that RPGamer is in love with, and we're proud of it. So now that we've shared ours, we'd love to hear from you. And finally, don't forget to check out the individual lists on the main page.
