The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

The 2003 GameCube RPG, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker was easily one of the most debated games of its time. Gamers had been promised a realistic Link and Wind Waker tossed them a cel-shaded, cartoony Link instead. Those who were able to look past the lack of realism found the cartoony world and characters to be highly detailed and rather extensive. Then came more complaints about the amount of time spent sailing around the water-filled world. Love it or not, Wind Waker brought a rather unique style to the series. That style is now returning in the form of The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass for the Nintendo DS.

A portable adventure beginning after the events of Wind Waker, Phantom Hourglass offers a major change from the norm with complete touch screen controls. Want to move Link from point A to point B? All you have to do is use the stylus to tap where you want to move. Need to hit switches with the boomerang? Thanks to the DS controls, you get to draw a path for it to follow. Staff reviewer Jason "Ishmael" Schreier states, "Even though people like to knock Wind Waker, it's one of my favorite games of all time, and Phantom Hourglass looks like it's going to be a great sequel." The innovative control scheme build upon the solid Zelda series foundation all in one handheld package helps to make Phantom Hourglass our current most anticipated game for the rest of the year.

Currents columnist Cole "Ilchymis" Jones had this to say: "As anyone who has casually read my column knows, Zelda titles have been pretty much the only thing I've played in the last three months. From Link's Awakening and Ocarina of Time, to Link to the Past and Twilight Princess, the Zelda series has always been a centerpiece of my gaming, and one of the top contenders for the number one position in my gaming heart (Final Fantasy doesn't die easy!) I've been dreaming of this game for almost a year now, and can't wait to unravel the story and see how the stylus controls pan out (I'm praying that some players' mentions of a non-stylus based control scheme are true). This game is going to be awesome, and I really can't wait to give it a try."

Interested RPGamers should keep an eye out, as The Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass will be released on October 1.
