Namco and Flagship Studios' Hellgate: London flows in the same vein as titles such as Metroid Prime, the Elder Scrolls series, and Omikron: The Nomad Soul in that it attempts to mix strong elements of other genres with a first-person viewpoint. This comes in lieu of just giving the player a gun and letting him plow through monster after monster like countless amounts of first-person shooters out there. While a lot of companies seem to use the RPG moniker as a buzzword as of late, Hellgate: London does, in fact, entail a lot of traditional RPG elements that RPGamers everywhere hold dear to their hearts. I had the opportunity to take the game for a test drive this afternoon, and I was pleasantly surprised by the title.

The first-person view does serve as your primary viewpoint into the world, but there is also an option to switch to third person. Another feature implemented is the ability to wield two different weapons at once. Whether or not those two weapons are both the same is entirely up to the player.

All in all, it seems too soon to say whether or not this game will turn out to be a winner, or turn out to quietly fade into gaming history. It certainly is different though, and it was a breath of fresh air.
