Hello again! A bit of a shorter entry this
week. As we gear up for the launch of Mass Effect 3,
I wonder how many of you are replaying the
first two games? I'd love to hear stories
about your Shepards.
Anyway, on to the letters!

Wheels,
Quick question for you. Have you played Ico
and/or Shadow
of the Colossus? I am not sure they
are rpg's exactly, but I think they were
discussed on rpgamer. Anyway, I am a huge
fan of both and have been in eager
anticipation of Team Ico's supposed third
release, "The
Last Guardian". Unfortunately I
recently heard that the lead guy Fumito
Ueda has bailed on the project. If
this is true, do you think we should have
any hope of seeing the Last Guardian
anytime soon? (I think it was originally
scheduled for 2011).
Thanks for any news or insights you might
have on the Team Ico situation!
Sincerely,
Averagejoe
Wheels
I
did not pick them up when they
originally came out, but I have
recently gotten the Ico
and Shadow of the Collossus
collection as a birthday present
from my parents, and have found
it to be quite stunning. I have
no idea how Shadow
of the Collossus even
ran on PS2s! Anyway, I have
followed this story a bit and I
can tell you that you need not
worry too much. Though Ueda has
left Sony, he hasn't stopped
working on the game at all.
Though now working as a
contractor, he still is working
in office, and day to day
development of the game hasn't
changed. That's not to say the
game hasn't had a difficult
development cycle. Reports are
that other Sony developers are
being brought in to help finish
the project. Still, it seems
clear to me that this isn't a
project Sony is just about to
give up on. I'd say expect the
game by the end of the year or
in early 2013. I'm sure we'll
hear more about it by E3!

Dear Wheels, please compare three RPGs to
rivers. :D
-Severinmira
Wheels
Really?
REALY?!??!
OK I accept this challenge. I
guess I'll start with Resonance
of Fate is like the
Amazon river. It has many twists
and turns along its path through
a dense and complicated forest,
however it still has a
definitive start and finish. The
forest here of course referring
to Resonance of Fate's
dense play mechanics.
Final Fantasy X
is like the Connecticut river.
It is certainly good looking and
enjoyable to experience, but for
the most part it is a straight
path, running the usual north to
south route.
Dragon Quest VII
is like the Nile river. They're
both insanely long!

Dear Wheels, how many games would you say
you beat a year? How do you deal with the
glut of releases and prioritize what it is
you want to play?
Wheels
This
is a good question. I'm going to
leave multi-player focused games
out of this equation, as there
isn't really a necessity to beat
them in the traditional sense.
I'll also leave reviewed games
out of these calculations since
I finish those much quicker than
casual play. That being said,
I'd say I finish on average five
to seven games a year. I get
easily distracted by new games,
so I'll often drop what I'm
playing and move to something
else depending on mood. I don't
really have any good method of
prioritizing, I just play what
I'm in the mood for.

Why do you think RPGamers should care about
Tales of
Graces F?
Wheels
Well,
because it is far more than just
another Tales
game. This is the first
game we'll have in English using
an off-shoot of the battle
system created for the Tales
of Destiny PS2 remake.
This is a far cry from the
typical Tales
system, and I think many
RPGamers will find it far more
interesting than the systems in
Tales of the Abyss
and similar games. I can't
recommend it enough.

Also is Rchard hotter than Yuri?
-Nyx
Wheels
Though
I am in no way qualified to
answer this question, yes, yes
he is!

Go through all the platformer mascots of the
90s that deserve to be returned, and put
them into RPGs. You can include Bubsy as a
character that dies, if you like.
-JuMeSyn
Wheels
Well I'll do you one better, and
suggest an RPG full of 90s
nostalgia. For starters, the party
will be made up of various mascots,
like you suggest, from platformers
in the 90s. They will be lead by
Earthworm Jim, who wanders about the
world aimlessly after his cartoon
show is canceled. His best friend
and companion is Bubsy, who
(spoilers) eventually kicks the
bucket. Traveling with them as well
is Cool Spot, a rogue, Aero the
Acrobat, another Rogue type, and
finally Ristar, a mage/cleric combo.
Their quest is to regain stardom by
finding the sports franchises lost
during the 90s, mainly the Hartford
Whalers, The Quebec Nordiques, and
the Houston Oilers. The main villain
will be Sparkster. Having recently
been gloriously revived by Konami,
the success has driven him mad and
he tries to stop the party. Towns
will be based on lost cartoons from
the 90s. So you may wonder into
Duckberg from Duck
Tales, or perhaps run into
the
Samurai Pizza Cats. It would
mostly be a funny game, but would
also explore peoples' connection to
mascots and sports franchises, and
what it means to them when they
leave. The title? 90
Mascots and the Quest for Brass
Bonanza. |
That's it for this week!
