Josh - 8:32 EST

Ok, listen up, kids. Make sure you figure out what your game is soon...or else you may lose money at the casino. ^^; So, $140 lighter, I now know that I suck at Blackjack and Roulette (though my friend made $500 in roulette today), and that I should probably stick to what I do best: Poker. Sigh. Turns out that I really should stick to games that require a -tad- bit of skill rather than practically all luck. Yargh!

L E T T E R S
Orrrrrrrrrrrr-oh.

Hey Ouro,

First, continuing the topic from last weekend's columns on hybrid RPGs, I would actually like to see more fusions of RPG gameplay in more RPGs these days. What I mean by this is seeing two different types of gameplay from two radically different RPGs play out in one game. My thought/example of this idea would be seeing the PASSIVE style of gameplay from a Harvest Moon RPG combined with the ACTIVE style of gameplay from an action-RPG like Brave Fencer Musashi, and seeing both styles play out in an RPG where one main character has passive gamplay for his story while the other main character has active gameplay for her story. The closest I can come to seeing something could be Atelier Iris Two where the heroine has to combine items using alchemy while the hero travels the world using the items the heroine created to help further the story of the game. Just to be clear, I've never played Atelier Iris Two, but I'm just using that as an example. What are your thoughts on my idea?

Second, just out of curiosity, how is the word Ouro supposed to be pronounced? Is it supposed to sound similar to the word EURO or to sound more clsoely similar to EARL? Or am I wrong on both counts, and a third pronounciation exists I never thought of before?

That's all I got, so handle with care, ok?

This end down,
BLG

Josh

It's ok, I've never played Atelier Iris 2 either, but I see what you mean. That would add a surprising level of depth to an RPG, something that could maintain a gamer's interest in what could otherwise be construed as a lackluster RPG. Traveling around the world while having some sort of business in the background would interest me and my micromanaging self. I'd like to see something of a magic shop back at home, where by collecting ingredients in the world, you can ship them back and switch over to the shop to find new spells. Or maybe owning a business back at home, where your family can sell the various things you come across for quite a nice profit.

The way you pronounce it is "Or-oh," BLG! You must learn this pronunciation, embrace it...love it, if you will. Or, you can just call me Josh, if you like! I really don't mind, either way!

Always a pleasure, BLG!

I should have split on those 7s...

So Ouro the great Weekend host.

What moment in any RPG you've played as made you say. "Damn I never would have expected that". You know like you helping Ness in Earthbound, or a boss battle appearing out of nowhere!

Also how much wood could a woodchuck, chuck. If a wood chuck could start chucking wood at 5 pieces per 30 seconds and slow down to 3 pieces per 30 seconds in 1 hour?

Bainick wishes the good ol' cartoons would come back!

Josh

How about the final boss in Final Fantasy IX? I didn't see that coming. Who the hell was Necron, and why the hell did he want to fight me? It's a fun game, but still...that was just unnecessary. As for something completely surprising me, I thought that Teepo coming back towards the end of BoF3 as a dragon was a surprise. Most of the time when something surprising happens in an RPG, there have been plenty of people who have spoiled it for me, unfortunately. Aeris's death was one of those.

Ok, calculating the rate of chuckage by the woodchuck...well, this is a math problem. Why do you torture me so? And are we talking a constant decrease in chucking? I mean, what about breaks? Does the woodchuck need to take a drag from a cigarette every 10 minutes? Bainick, you sicken me with your lack of knowledge of the woodchuck's work ethic. Please do more research before asking me again. ^^b

Whack was a good choice, too.

What is your all-time favorite spell in an RPG? I really like Mother Ocean from Suikoden I. It bascially let you restart the battle by resurrecting everyone, giving them full health, and curing all their status ailments. They toned the spell down for future Suikoden installments, but it was sweet while it lasted.

Vicissitude

Josh

Favorite spell = Energize from Secret of Evermore. That thing boosted your attack level to 3 in about a second, allowing you to just pound on the enemy for a bit of time before it wore off. Couple that with Barrier, and you are an invincible killing machine. Definitely makes Carltron one of the easiest bosses in history.

You know, if you were a Bothan, I'd kill you if you asked for this information.

Overlord Ourobolus,

Hmm, free dental eh? Not bad, not bad. I suppose I can understand your desire to simply take over and kill all those that oppose your new rule. It worked in the olden days and in numerous RPGs after all. Oh wait, no it didn't. The good guys always rise up and destroy the tyrant. To quote something I forget, the tighter you make your grasp, the more will slip through. How do you intend to escape the fate of those that came before you?

-Roku

Josh

That's a Star Wars reference, my friend. "The more you tighten your grasp, the more star systems will slip through your fingers," I believe, said by Princess Leia to Grand Moff Tarkin. Anyway, fandom aside (I used to be big into Star Wars books until I realized that they were all the SAME), I feel that it will be easy to escape said fate. You see, I am an entity on the Internet, and nothing you guys do will affect me! I can easily crush all of you with my bits! Yes...my...bits...>_> <_<...never mind.

*hides in a corner and schemes*

This letter brought to you by Paneling World.

Hi there Ouro,

I don't remember if I wrote you yet so here it goes, I forgot to mention it in my letters to Matt and Xlash but here are my thoughts on the in game advertising by Square-Enix

I really don't see the big deal take FF7 Cid cleary smokes some kind of ciggarette why not just say they are a certain brand and get some extra money from it, maybe that wasn't the best example but you know what I mean, also I think in FF7 they had an unpaid advertisement for some CD My Bloody Valentine I think been along time since I read that somewhere so it's not like it is a new idea, and if they replace potions with Mountain Dew I highly doubt it will make gamers drink more Dew than they already dew ha ha puntastic so yeah I don't really mind unless one of your party members is the mascot for whatever company they are advertising for I can just see it now

Ronald of the house of McDonald uses big mac attack, causing 500 damage and clogging everyone's arteries for the next turn Though that would be entertaining, fighting the forces of the King, clogging arteries as you go o.o,

Anyway enough of my nonsensical weirdness and onto a question

Question: What kind of products do you think they'll advertise?

Also the only S-E franchise that might do well with in-game advertising would be Star Ocean, instead of random off the wall brickabrack you could now make name brand brickabrack, look at Fayt stylin and profilin in his Nikes he made on an underdeveloped planet

Arros Raikou
*Must kill Lincoln* Sorry just the ad talk made me remember that ^^;;

Josh

Cid smoking a cigarette is different than having Cid smoking a Marlboro™ cigarette. If he said to Tifa, "Hey, I need to take a drag from my Marlboro™," instead of, "Hey, I need to take a drag from my cigarette," then we have crossed the line. I don't find anything wrong with them possibly placing -advertisements- in the game to -advertise- the item, but if these items start becoming a part of -the game-, then it becomes distracting and interferes with my game enjoyment. I will never walk into an armor shop and purchase UnderArmour™ for my characters...if that happens...wow. I may just explode. Equipping someone with Nike Shox™ to give them a +4 speed boost is not what I call proper.

If they do it, I don't see the harm with adding a Pepsi machine in the background, or maybe having a billboard or two along the highway advertising for McDonalds...but the fact is that a lot of games aren't set in our world, and it forces these adverts to be out of place. In Parasite Eve, I actually -expect- them to put something of that sort in there, but if I was walking around the world of Spira and saw a sign for a Chocobo Burger at McDonalds...I think I may have done something drastic. Sigh...businesses are businesses, and they will do practically anything to make a buck. The problem is that for a business to realize they are making a bad decision, they have to go through with it first and then reap the consequences. So, it may happen, but here's hoping it bombs.

Presenting...

THE HOPEFULLY OUTSTANDING NEW GAME!

Or, THONG for short. For now, the prizes will be limited to Guest-Hosting opportunities, since this is essentially an experiment. I'm positive that it will turn out well, though! Now, for the setup:

This is the game board. If you ever talk to CactuarJoe, make sure to thank him for the wonderful job he did! Thanks Joe!

If you want to join: Please send me your top 3 choices for characters for your game piece. A list of them that can be used can be found here. Please only choose from the "PARTY" or "NPC" links. Also make sure that the character has a left/right-facing sprite, and a front/back facing sprite. Thanks!

  • Everyone begins the game on START.
  • For every letter you write in, I will roll a 3-sided die (I'll use RPGamer's resident Random Number Generator, DiceyBot). That will determine how many spaces you move.
  • You may only get credit for one letter, per day - max 3 per weekend. Timestamps will be checked, and only letters sent during Friday - Monday before my column will be counted towards that weekend. Letters sent at other times during the week will not count until Saturday.
  • Letters must be addressed to me, at either qna@rpgamer.com or ourobolus@rpgamer.com. Letters will get credit even if they are unanswered, or even if Matt answers them.
  • If you land on a Spell Tile, you MUST use the spell listed on the Tile. Spells and their effects are listed after the rules.
  • The Trivia Tile MUST be landed on before you may enter the FINISH Tile. Answering the trivia question correctly will automatically grant you entry into the FINISH Tile, and you will receive the prize.
  • If you reach the Trivia Tile, another reader who is participating in the game will ask you a question. However, the person who lands on the Tile decides WHICH reader asks the question, as well as WHICH RPG from which the question will be asked (e.g. "Wonderslime wants Bainick to ask him a question about Chrono Trigger").
  • If the person who provides the question has not played the game, they may use anything necessary to come up with a question. Failure to provide a question over 2 days of my column will result in the same effect as if the receiver answered the question right, and he/she will progress to the FINISH Tile.
  • If you are on the Trivia Tile, you are invulnerable until the first question has been completed.
  • The Prize for this initial board will be 5 Guest Hosting positions. Once those are completed, a new board will be created, probably with more prizes.
  • The effects will go as such. Movement->Spells Cast->Effects. Everyone will move at the same time, all spells will be cast at the same time, and all effects will happen at the same time. Attack spells will be cast at the beginning of the day after they were landed on. Spells are cast only if the character is on the space at the -end- of the day.

Spell effects are as follows:

  • Bolt 1: Player chooses another player to push back 1 tile.
  • Bolt 2: Player chooses another player to push back 2 tiles.
  • Stop: The next time Player sends in a letter, it will take 2 days for the roll to take place.
  • Haste: Player receives an extra roll which will make him/her advance 1-3 tiles.
  • Slow: Player receives an extra roll which will make him/her retreat 1-3 tiles.
  • Merton: Player chooses another player to push back 4 tiles, at the cost of Player moving back 2 tiles. Can only be used twice.
  • Roulette: I roll a 20-sided die. Any players standing on that numbered tile are pushed back 2 tiles.
C L O S I N G
IN CONCLUSION:

Wow! The first person to reach the Trivia Tile is Arros Raikou. Congratulations! Remember, you cannot attack him until he answers the question, regardless of if he's right or wrong. From the moment he chooses who he wants to answer the question, you will have 2 days (Weekend Q&A days) to provide a question. I'll send you an email regarding it.

In other news, it looks like some decent RPGs are coming out for PSP! VP:Lenneth is sure to garner my attention, and I may give Blade Dancer a looksie, too. What do you think, is the PSP finally shaping up to be a system that can hold its own in the RPG world? Obviously, we need more examples, but just what is stopping the PSP from being a powerhouse in this genre?

See you all tomorrow!
